17. Hard Links and Symbolic Links

Today we're going to test your virtual imagination ability! You're probably familiar with shortcuts in Microsoft Windows or aliases on the Mac. Linux has something, or actually some things similar, called hard links and symbolic links.

What I'm wondering is what would be a situation where one would use hardlinks? I've never used them (except by accident) and really have no idea what they would be useful for. I assume you can't use different permissions for the different links to the inode. Maybe it could be used to share a file between users, kind of like the all users account in Windows? I guess like any tool, you don't really know how bad you need it until it helps you accomplish some task you previously couldn't do, kind of like 'screen' for me.

Nice tutorial. Thanks Eric

"Do you begin to see, then, what kind of world we are creating? It is the exact opposite of the stupid hedonistic Utopias that the old reformers imagined. A world of fear and treachery and torment, a world of trampling and being trampled upon, a world which will grow not less but more merciless as it refines itself. Progress in our world will be progress toward more pain."

I've never had a need for a hard link either, Greg, but you have to admit that their characteristics compared to sym links are pretty interesting.
