I use Trillian Pro myself, so i havent experienced what you're talking about. i can see one or two messages, but 788 is mean on Trillian's part. it *could* be because MSN messenger is going into encrypted mode soon, so they might (just speculating here) be thinking of killing off the free edition since MSN *may* require license payments from Trillian to use their MSN protocol, in which case, offering a free Trillian would be impossible. once again, i'm just speculating, treat this as a 'rumor' unless someone can maybe contact Trillian and find a direct answer to this. (Scot?)
as for free alternative IM that also tap into MSN/ICQ/Yahoo/AIM, try these. they dont look as pretty, but i think they are skinable. Miranda IM: http://www.miranda-im.org/ Gaim IM: http://gaim.sourceforge.net/ here is some more info on the planned MSN blockage, straight from Gaim's MSN developer: QUOTE A lot of people have been asking about whether MS's latest decisions regarding MSN will affect us. Here's the general information on what they're doing.
MS has decided that everyone should upgrade to MSN version 5.0 or higher. MSN v5 is the first to use their MSN Protocol v8, which is the first to use SSL for login. Now, we know how to login over this. This is not hard, and we will be supporting MSNP9, the latest version of the protocol, soon. However, upgrading to this does not guarantee us anything. Whereas previously, Microsoft has let third party clients connect, they now require a license for doing so. They still encourage clients to connect to their network, so with any luck, we can work something out. If not, people may find a way to connect anyway, but the legalities of this are pretty obvious. Key words: "Intellectual Property" and "DMCA." We cannot give a yes or a no to the question, "Will Gaim continue to work after October 15th?" (Which, btw, is the day that third party clients not using MSNP8 or higher will be unable to connect). We will do our best, but if it comes down to it, we will drop MSN support. If you have a lot of friends on MSN, perhaps it's the time to migrate them. Get them to install Gaim |

If you are looking to replace the free Trillian for one of the best encrypted IM clients on the market, you might want to try out the free Hush Messenger at HushMail.com.

Your chat sessions will enjoy the same ease of use expected in any instant messaging client, with the security and transparent, end-to-end encryption shared by all Hush services!
Hush Messenger now includes the functionality of Hush SMN, and will notify you when new email arrives in your Hushmail account! Many new features (some Premium) such as data storage and file sharing are in development - download Hush Messenger today and you'll receive the updates as soon as they're available! -------------------- |

Thanks for all the links! I don't never use MSN or Yahoo so i'm not worried about it. I just use AIM and use Trillian because they don't have adds, and i like the way it looks
I have to reinstall anyway... i don't think i'm using the most recent version. I still can't believe that i've chatted for 788 hours!!! -------------------- ~SonicDragon

QUOTE (ibe98765 @ Oct 1 2003, 08:08 PM) I don't do IM, but belive I read the other day that Yahoo will now be blocking Trillian... yeah, Yahoo broke Trillian and other IM's usage, but it only lasted about a week. it broke Gaim too, but here is a note on Gaim's website. it's nice how Trillian is sharing their info with a free competitor. kuddos on that! QUOTE September 30, 2003: Our friends over at Cerulean Studios managed to break my speed record at cracking Yahoo authentication schemes with an impressive feat of hackery. They sent it over and here it is in Gaim 0.70. However, certain details of the authentication scheme depend on the challenge string the server sends us, and there's really no way to tell what it does until Yahoo starts sending new challenge strings. So you can expect a few more breakages to come soon. I wouldn't sign offline if I were you. Trillian had almost daily updates as AOL tried blocking them, a year ago or so. i'd like to see IM messaging to become OPEN like telephone or email, where anyone can message anyone. i mean, can't MSN, Yahoo, AIM and ICQ just shake hands and form a super IM network? |
