You'll need to install the restricted codecs from this repository specified in this help document: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Restricte...ty%20Jackalope)

That video plays fine here once it has been saved locally with both movie player and vlc.

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit.

I believe the trick is to install mplayer and its codecs.

I had to install mplayer to get some of the radio station streams to work.

Thank you I have already done that too. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 right now and I can play it if I download it and then open it on the desktop. It should play when I click on it with out having to place it in my home folder or on the desktop first and then open it to play. I did discover that when I click on the link firefox downloads it but trys to open it with evince.
Will have to try and figure that one out.

You start with a bag full of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck.

Aha... then the problem is not some codec but the fox which doesn't know how to handle the asf file, that's why it wants to open it using evince (which is a pdf reader).
In firefox preferences change the file association for asf from evince to for ex. mplayer, that should fix it.

I have already checked that and it is set to Mplayer. I even removed Evince still no joy. I am using firefox 3.55 maybe do a reinstall and see what happens.

Is there a VLC Media Plugin installed in firefox Mel?
I just ask because now and then I like to see the shuttle launches and re-entries from Kennedy Space Center, they offer the video in asf or asx file In firefox I can play back the video live when I have the aforementioned plugin installed (and javascript enabled). So maybe that's the missing thing? I do this from within windows, never tried it on any of my linux boxes.

Yes there is a VLC but It wont let me put it in the preference, applications for asf.
When I click on the link in firefox it still trys to use evince yet evince is not even shown in the preference, applications window. I assume it has to be something to do with Firefox 3.55 I also have the same problem in Ubuntu 9.04 with firefox 3.55 as well as in Ubuntu 9.10

Well I just tried Firefox 3.6 Beta 3 and got the same thing. In looking at the link could it be that the file actually has to be downloaded to open. look at the last part of the URL. /name/ftc-vi26.wmv look at the FTC could that be the problem and why I have to download it befor I can open it and would that be the reason evince trys to open it? Just a thought.

That's a video of Lou Dobbs on CNN live, right? It opens here in winamp biggrin.gif (it's a .wmv, windows media video) and it shows Lou and I can hear him talk.
You need the windows codecs for these.

In FF you probably need the mplayer-plugin. With that one it recognizes this file (.wmv), see:
http://mplayerplug-in.sourceforge.net/

If that doesn't solve the problem, read the thread below and see if it applies to your situation:

Thanks Striker
The links did not help me but it got me to thinking. When I would try to choose other instead of evince all I got was a list of files in my home dir. well I started looking and VLC, Mplayer, Totem, none were listed yet all were installed. So one of my pet peves with linux Ubuntu has always been that when you choose other all you get was a list of files (Directory tree) of you home dir. yet none of the commands or applications that you need are there. you have to go to /usr/bin dir and there is where you find the command to run VLC, Totem or whatever. I like vlc so that is what I choose. now when I click on the link the WMV file comes right up and starts playing in firefox like it should. I should have realized this a long time ago, but my mind is not as sharp as it used to be. Thanks for getting me to thinking again.
