I seriously appreciate this thread. Recently we've been having an issue at work. One of the people in our small shop (5 guys) wants to stay connected to his MySpace account all day, answering and sending IMs and generally neglecting his work. That was frustrating enough, but then he got a virus from MySpace and it affected another computer on our network. Now my boss is a very easy-going, nice guy, but this needed to stop. Since I set up and maintain our network, it fell to me to find a way to deny access to MySpace. We tried just asking him to stay off that site at work, but he only complied for a short while then fell back into it again. First I tried blocking MySpace on the router. While that should have worked, it didn't. Next I just disabled the wireless connection, since he can't connect wired from where he parks his laptop. That failed when he started connecting through another wireless connection outside our store. Since he's no longer on our network, the boss's only concern now is that he uses the boss's computer to surf MySpace when his pirated connection fails. My boss told him this wasn't acceptable but when he's out of the store and I'm busy, he jumps right on the boss's computer. (The boss found this guy's account still logged in one day, and as a bit of retribution, signed him up as friends with Michael Jackson and Richard Simmons.)Then I remembered this thread. I downloaded the Host file, added "myspace.com" and "www.myspace.com" to the list and installed it on the boss's computer and on the Windows side of mine (just in case). Now all he gets when he tries to log in is "Firefox cannot open this webpage".

TeMerc (or anyone):Do you know if the host file can block a specific logon? For instance, say I want to block only a specific account on a site (for example: myspace.com/fred). Can the Host file block that specific URL, or will it only block the whole domain?Yes, I do have a reason for asking.

Just found my answer: "No wildcards are allowed and only the main domain name is a valid entry. Directories and files at a site are not supported. Thus “www.microsoft.com” is a valid entry but “www.microsoft.com/windows98/” is not."http://vlaurie.com/c...icles/hosts.htm
