RSS feeds

This is a two part question:If you use RSS, what are your favorite feeds?For firefox users: Which extension do you like the best for viewing RSS?Being new to RSS, I chose a few that matched my favorites panel, but it seems like a rather thin list. I use several pages from the NY Times, PC mag new product reviews and CMP's Tech Web.For the Firefox extension, I am using Sage. I thought I'd see if anyone found something they like better.

As you can probably guess I have a lot feeds that focus on Apple / Mac... It's great having the information from sites come to me, and if I'm interested in reading more I can go to the full article (unless the feed offers the full context).Right now I have a slim 130 subscriptions, I'm running NetNewsWire for OS X; and out of the 82 feeds, 3 are from my own sites, 38 are misc blogs (which cover the spectrum: recipes, free stuff, news, tips, jokes, comics, etc. ) and the rest are mostly from software sites or are geared towards Apple / Mac / Tech news.I also use a feature of NetNewsWire that keeps previous news items on my computer... I just recently found that option and its great to be able to go back a few days to find something (esp for feeds that are always being updated).Some non-Mac feeds that might be of interest::"> Gizmodo -- Gizmodo is an online review dedicated to gadgets, gizmos, and cutting-edge consumer electronics.:thumbsup: Endadget -- Engadget is a web magazine with obsessive daily coverage of everything new in gadgets and consumer electronics.:hmm: A List Apart -- Web design news, info, and insights since 1995. Peachy,I tried Sage a while back on my Dell... But I didn't care for the way it worked within FF... and I don't like how FF does RSS. So sage doesn't do RDF feeds??? That feed is valid on my end.Anyway here is the URL for just the site: http://www.dpreview.com/ Edited by Arena2045

mezzoblue is a great site!~For those who want to list your favorite feeds like Peachy and I did, use this template, and fill in the specific areas:For a XML feed:

[url=http://....]:xml:[/url] [b]Feed and/or site title[/b] -- Description of the feed...

For a RSS feed:

[url=http://....]:rss:[/url] [b]Feed and/or site title[/b] -- Description of the feed...

For a RDF feed:

[url=http://....]:rdf:[/url] [b]Feed and/or site title[/b] -- Description of the feed...

For an ATOM feed:

[url=http://....]:atom:[/url] [b]Feed and/or site title[/b] -- Description of the feed...

Ack, those emoticons don't work in the signature area! :o
Peachy,To use the feed emoticons in your signature (like I have)... first locate the full url of the image, then use the IMG tag.Example:
[url=http://....][img=http://forums.scotsnewsletter.com/style_emoticons/default/rss.gif][/url]

I went ahead and changed your sig for you. :o

xml.gif BBC News-World Edition - All the news of the world up to the minutexml.gif Wil Wheaton dot Net - author, actor, geek...rss.gif Internet Archive - the last 50 submissions to the archive: texts, films/video, audio, whatever!As for my FF rss reader, I am agnostic in terms of plug-ins...I use BlogExpress. It's good, basic, & checks new subs for correct URLs via a form even I can fill out. :D Plus, I use it to check my own hand-coded rss feed for errors. Plus, the price is right ($0.00). So, how do we do anything with the gobble-dee-gook?
If you use Firefox with an RSS extension installed, just right-click on the RSS/XML icon to bookmark it in the RSS folders of your bookmarks. Basically, the idea is to add the URL to your RSS reader. It depends on the software used.

Guys,Can we just back up a bit and somebody give the the RSS 101 course? I read Scot's burst about Sage so I let it install. If I hit Alt-S, I get a left hand pane with Yahoo Sport and the BBC News: don't recall inviting either of them in but never mind.Where do I go from here?Take for example Arena's The Register feed, I click on that yellow button which gives me a new window and an options dialog. Huh? I just want to read it, thanks! I have no idea what I want otherwise. Must have been written by MS help dept!How about getting news feed from a UK newspaper? If I click on these, I get a page of XML.RSS must be intuitive after the event 'cos it's certainly not intuitive to set up.Thanks for the help!Andy

If you have Sage configured correctly, then you should have one bookmark folder designated to save the feeds. I created a folder in my bookmarks called RSS Feeds. Then I went into the Tools > Extensions menu and selected Sage. Clicked the Options button and specified RSS Feeds in the Select Feeds Folder drop down box. Now, all you have to do is right-click the link to the xml or rss feed and add it to your bookmarks in the RSS Feeds folder. Sage will then show it in the panel. When you click on the link in the panel, the right-hand pane will display a nicely formatted feed.

That UK newsPaper sure isn't intuitive. For an example of an intuitive site, open the current issue of Scot's Newsletter Look at the bottom right of Firefox's window - in the status bar - and you'll see an icon (vivid orange in most themes.) Click on it and a Subscribe to "Scot's Newsletter" box will pop-up. Click on that to add a Live Bookmark. If you put that Live Bookmark in the Sage Feeds bookmarks folder, it will appear in Sage's list of feeds.Ok, let's go back to that UK newsPaper you're interested in. Put a checkmark in the Please tick here to indicate that you have read and agree to the terms and conditions below box below the feeds. Click on a feed you want to subscribe to. (For the sake of exposition, let's assume Breaking new.) You'll see a page of code that looks something like
- <rss version="2.0">- <channel><title>Telegraph News | Breaking News</title><link>http://portal.telegraph.co.uk</link>
Don't worry about that. All you need care about is what you see in the location bar - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/newsfeed/rss/news_breaking.xml or something similar. Select that url and copy it to the clip-board. Open the Sage side panel. Click Options> Manage Feed List (top right corner of the side panel.) Then File> New Live Bookmark... Name it anything you'd like and paste the URL into Feed Location:Does that help or is everything still clear as mud?

Mud: never - that all makes a lot more sense now and it works!If Firefox didn't need Sage in the first place, how did it work then?Does Sage work in Internet Explorer? Or would I need an different extension?Now if you guys could just fix the weather.....Andy

It still works the same way. Open the Bookmarks sidebar and navigate to the Sage Feeds folder. The feeds/live bookmarks appear as folders under the Sage Feeds folder. If you look in one of those feeds/live bookmarks you'll see titles (of individual items currently supplied by the feed) displayed as bookmarks. You can click on one of those bookmarks to display that particular item. You could also right click on a feed/live bookmark and choose Open in tabs.
