Presumably I would have to use Nvidia proprietary driver for 4k. It looks like I'd need a GTX970 as well for acceptable gaming. My 27" HD monitor has decided to die and some 4k monitors are getting down to my price range (at a big stretch ). And I'd love not to see pixels like HD on 27". What I did here was to throw down the money to get a Sony Bravia 4k, the 43" model. VERY fine pic. It upscales all input to the 4k resolution. And shortly after I discovered that none of my pc's would do better than 2560 wide. So I recently bought a new vid card, an MSI "GeForce GT-720" which has a gig of memory onboard, and runs quietly with no fan. Has DVI and hdmi output jacks in addition to the ordinary VGA 15-pin. I'm not interested in gaming, you might need more horsepower for that. The dvd that came with the card has a very recent Nvidia driver on it. There is quite a bit of 4k content on Youtube, and a growing amount on Netflix. But my big surprise is how much better regular HD looks on the Sony. They say a net connection that can maintain at least 15 Megabits is required for online video. All that said, I hardly use the pc connected to it, since the Sony has built-in Youtube and Netflix apps -- plus a bunch more. 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Still, the LG 19" one I replaced with it was still working perfectly last time I tried it. Will be using it again now temporarily. @burninbush I think 43" may be a bit large on my desk! We have a nice 50-something inch LG in the loungeroom which has a beautiful picture, one of the best I've seen. Don't think my eyes are good enough to appreciate 4k just for TV though. That card is £40 more expensive over here. :'( Centrecom is one of the cheapest local stores. The Gigabyte card was $30 more at another place I regularly shop. The LG monitor is $150 off recommended retail price. I'm having second thoughts about spending ~$1200 on these. Still very tempted though. Will have to see what third thoughts come up with! ps. No brainer then they definitely are worth the money. You can do stuff whilst the missus shops on-line whilst playing footsie on the sofa. The driver was just uploaded yesterday and the one from Debian repo couldn't build the module for the current siduction kernel. It is just beautiful. Debian Jessie instructions work for siduction and probably most recent Debian derivatives. https://wiki.debian....GraphicsDrivers If you already have kernel headers installed and have nonfree repo active, you can just apt-get update && apt-get install nvidia-driver - remember to make an xorg.conf file either manually or with nvidia-xconfig. (I forgot and was greeted with a black screen with blinking cursor). I had a GTX 560Ti already so installed the drivers before installing the new GTX 970 card. This card would not display 4k. Check the specs of your graphics card to see if it does 3840 x 2160 resolution. - switch off, plug in the monitor via DisplayPort and boot. - you may need to set display resolution. You can install and use nvidia-settings or the native settings. In KDE Plasma 5 it's System Settings > Display And Monitor > Display Configuration - now everything will be tiny! First, set the font DPI. KDE System Settings > Fonts > Force Fonts DPI . I set it to 192. Now set your default font sizes. - application windows will need to be resized as you first use them. Hopefully the window manager remembers them - Some applications will need minor tweaks to settings. Some applications just won't play ball. eg. QMMP refuses to allow its playlist window to be resized. - but overall it's an extremely pleasant experience.
