Finding Lost Modem

Before my cookies and cake in the oven burn, I need a brain recharge. (I know, I am leaving myself wide open here.) My sister is going to be calling me in a couple of hours for directions on fixing her modem problem. I have dealt with this in the past by uninstalling the modem, manually removing from devices and restarting and reinstalling.Problem: Win 2000 computer. Rebuilt with new parts after frying old. (No Jeber not on the stove!) Has a 56k modem (can't remember brand but I know it describes it as Ham Ambient in the set up).She has been doing okay with the computer but wants to get back on the internet. She tried to install her blue light special  but it says it can't find the modem.I am pretty sure it is an old modem of mine that drove me crazy (older brother rebuilt computer with spare parts from my house and his). Anyway, is there an easy way to get it to recognize the modem without removing and reinstalling? I don't know if she was sent the disks with the computer but probably has them but could not figure out what they are. BTW she is pretty computer illiterate!

Teacher,Can you pull the modem out, look on the board for an FCC ID number. Type that number into Google and you may find the make and model. Or feed into the US Government's FCC database (url I can't remember at the moment.) I suspect it may be a Winmodem. You'll have to track down the specific drivers for that card. But, get the FCC ID and we can go a-hunting!

 I'd tell her to go out and buy an external modem, should be pretty easy for you to talk her through installing it over the 'phone.Joy

Given those parameters, I would suggest that, if Win2K can't autodetect it, then the quickest, simplest solution might be for her to go to her local Best Buy and buy the cheapest external Win2K-compatible (driver included) 56K modem on the shelf, along with a serial cable.Seriously.

By the sound of it,the easiest solution is to throw the existing modem in the bin & start again! But lets not forget, this forum is just full of intelligent & very knowledgeable people who are totally committed to help solve those 'very tough questions'I just wish i was one of them :D

Being that she is computer illiterate and 1,400 miles away I am hesitant to send her out shopping. Her sixth grade son came home from boy scouts last night and announced he could build a computer. :D It seems they took trash computers and tore them apart and put them back together again. As soon as they finished, they tossed them. Finding the FCC number won't do any good because she does not have any access to the internet. Windows found the modem and driver but Internet Explorer did not. I do know it is one of those win modems. Ugh. Guess I had better go call her and see how far we can get. :)

Good news....I hope. I called and the brand new son-in-law answered the phone. He said he could take care of it. I hope so. All I know about him is he is a preacher. Guess he knows a little computer too.
