But are they counting all devices that run the Linux kernel? The reason I ask is because Chromebooks are becoming quite popular due to price and usability.

They mentioned this in the latest episode of Linux Action News. Apparently both sites they referenced counted ChromeOS separately, which only has about 0.something % market share.

Actually:

StatCounter’s desktop OS report for February 2017 puts Chrome OS usage at 3.36% versus 1.47% for Linux.
