DarkSerge Posted March 10, 2014 Share Posted March 10, 2014 I have a Boost Mobile Kyocera Hydro Edge phone running Android 4.1.2 and rooted. I have a problem where it just randomly reboots. BTW its not necessarily the phone but a software issue. A couple of the reboots were while the phone was sitting inactive, but Facebook app does run in the background. At first I was thinking maybe a known 4.1.2 issue or something. I haven't observed any reboots today so far. I have had tablets with Android 2.0 to 4.4.2 and all of them are subject to reboots. The equivalent of the BSOD in Windows. Almost always caused by corrupt apps. My latest was with the camera on an Acer A500 tablet running 4.4.2. Click on the default camera app and it would come up and then reboot the tablet. Well I did back with Gingerbread but that has been years ago. I have 200 apps on my phone alone and haven't rebooted in many months. I just checked and my nexus 7's uptime is 65 days. RAM isn't the big deal is was on earlier phones because today's phones have a lot more of it and the later versions of Android let the OS manage it. You can go to /Settings/Apps/Running and "stop" apps you feel you don't need at the moment but I don't really see the point. I don't recall coming even close to using all the RAM available. You could always check the Play Store for an app for managing your RAM. Because I've never felt the need, I've never bothered to do so. My older phone has much less memory than this one, so perhaps it was more relevant to it's older Android version. Is there an app that logs things on your phone? One that might tell me what's crashing? My phone's rebooted a couple times in the last hour now. I've also been chatting with a friend on Facebook Messenger during this period. I've uninstalled the app just to see what happens. Usually before a reboot I notice the wifi goes dead (it still shows a connection, but it's like nothing's going through) and every observed time I was using one of the FB apps. DarkSerge Posted March 11, 2014 Author Share Posted March 11, 2014 (edited) I found a few apps that read the current system log but they only scroll back to the last reboot. I noticed that the Eco Mode function tells me when it went into standby, and since I have it set to auto, it basically tells me when the phone last booted up (whichs tells me when the last random reboot was if I wasn't looking.) I've uninstalled the Facebook apps to see if they were causing the problem. Update: It's not Facebook. It just randomly rebooted while sitting here next to me idle after I uninstalled all FB apps. I can set it to automatically dim the screen or other things when the battery drains to a certain point, like auto-dim, shut off GPS, etc. at 20% battery. I decided to disable it just to see if it had any effect. Whether or not it has I guess it hard to tell until I turn it back on while keeping the WiFi off to see if it starts randomly rebooting again. DarkSerge Posted March 12, 2014 Author Share Posted March 12, 2014 Now I have to hunt down what apps want to start WiFi automatically when I'm not looking. The uptime on my phone was over 12 hours last night (meaning no reboots all day) then this morning my WiFi had turned itself on overnight and my uptime was only 2.5 hours. I don't mind keeping WiFi off and only using it when necessary. WiFi isn't that important on this phone. The top three on the battery use are Screen, Phone Idle, and Google Services.
