After Adobe pulled the 64 bit beta of Flash for Linux some months ago, some of us have had to jump through hoops to watch Flash content. No more! :sweatingbullets: They have just released a preview called "Square" for the 3 main OS platforms in 32- and 64-bit. I just tried it on YouTube and it works fine. It shows up in about:plugins as

Well it seems to work fine. I tested youtube and hulu. All videos play smooth and go full screen without any problems. It will take a couple of days to see how it works out but so far so good:Adobe flash test says:

I just d-loaded (from Adobe Labs) and installed this. Seems to be working find and dandy! It's about time, too. Some of these software companies act like 64 bit computing is something new and groundbreaking. Sheeesh! :thumbsup:

Hi everyone! It's me again.
I need to update my flash-player plugin because I cannot view videos in PCLinuxOS anymore. So I went to Synaptic and tried to do an upgrade with this result;

So I then went to Bruno's tutorial;

CODE
$ tar -xvzf install_flash_player_9_linux.tar.gz
$ su
< password >
# cd install_flash_player_9_linux
# cp $ tar -xvzf install_flash_player_9_linux.tar.gz
$ su
< password >
# cd install_flash_player_9_linux
# cp flashplayer.xpt   /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/
# cp libflashplayer.so   /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/

The only thing is that I cannot find a " flashplayer.xpt

CODE
[rejean@localhost ~]$ cd Downloads
[rejean@localhost Downloads]$ ls
010153comfrey.pdf                            libflashplayer.so
install_flash_player_11_linux.x86_64.tar.gz  usr/
[rejean@localhost Downloads]$

In "usr/" there are 3 folders;

CODE
[rejean@localhost Downloads]$ cd usr/
[rejean@localhost usr]$ ls
bin/  lib64/  share/
[rejean@localhost usr]$

but none as a flashplayer xpt.
What else should I do?

Well first off, version 9 is very old. Flash is currently at version 11.1.102.55-1 and the only file that is needed now is the libflashplayer.so file. So do not worry about the flashplayer.xpt as that step is not needed.

Also, why not just use your package manager to install the flashplugin?

It should be called flash-player-plugin in Synaptic and here are some good reasons to make sure you are running the latest version:

Hi Josh!
Obviously I forgot to say that I have downloaded the latest version and adapted Bruno's code accordingly.
The other thing is that when I download either a rpm or a tar.gz file and choose to run it with the package manager instead of saving it and doing the work manually I see Synaptic opening but that's it.

Anyway you can see that I did have installed the latest libflashplayer.so;

Now the permissions are set for " root " should I change them?

Ah ok, you had me worried. Let me see what I can find for you.

Odd, it looks like PCLinuxOS should of came with flash OOTB. Does synaptic show flash-player-plugin when you search?

If you look at the picture I posted you'll see that the first thing I tried was to update it from Synaptic but there is an error;

CODE
Depends: rpmlib (PayloadsISLzma (<=4.4.6-1 ) but it is not installable.

Also after installation, you need to restart your browser for it to take effect.  If you can, I would suggest using the version in Synaptic as it will be updated. Otherwise you have to keep up with the updates yourself as there are frequently security issues that are fixed.

Actually the dates you see on libflashplayer.so in the file manager just means you installed it/modified it on that date. It doesn't say what version you installed.

You should be able to determine what Flash version is currently installed for your browser here:

again if you look at the picture you'll see above the little window that it shows a possible update to " 11.1.102.55-1 ", which I have tried with the result inside the little window.

At least it works in Chrome and Firefox on Mac and Windows and IE on Windows.

Chrome on Debian doesn't seem to want to fill in the box for the current version of Flash. Weird.
