réjean
Hi all! Something weird happened to my machine today. The image on the monitor would go strange, with band s of slanted lines following each other so I thought it was the monitor (an old Sun 17 inch.) so I replaced it with another one (same type; Sun 17 inch) and a smaller 14 inches with the same result. So I changed the video card from the actual eGEForce FX5500 for a Radeon Card and I now have a graphic. So I reboot the computer and get the normal OpenSuSE bootloader but I cannot choose another distro from the list trying to do it with the keyboard. Oh! And before the bootloader comes on and I could choose to press F2 to get into the BIOS set up the keyboard is not responding. either ( I tried an old keyboard (PS2) instead of my actualUSB one with the same result ). As I said once in I can use the keyboard and I can use the mouse anytime. Has it ever happened to one of you before and what did you do beside trowing the whole thing into the ocean? raymac46
Sounds like your old GeForce FX5500 is toast. It's not supported by Nvidia any more and you would need at least a 6200 to get to use the latest drivers from Nvidia. Things should work with a PS/2 keyboard. That is really strange. Sometimes you need a PS/2 keyboard to get into the BIOS and enable USB legacy support so that a USB keyboard will work.
réjean
Thanks ray but I cannot use the keyboard until I am into OpenSuse even with a PS/2 keyboard. I'll keep on trying.
raymac46
I was wrong about the FX5500 not being supported. It won't use the latest drivers but the Nvidia legacy drivers are still available in Linux Mint at least.
réjean
Thanks Ray! Making progress at a snail pace, using an old PS/2 keyboard fighting with the 'e' and the 'p' but at last being able to open different distros.
