Bruno
Stryder:Freshmeat is the place with all the geeky stuff, it will give you a good impression of the +20 packages that come out on the net EVERY day ! For downloading and installing it is a bit wild up there because you have to know if it will fit on your distro. Later as you will have learned a lot about installing ¨tarballs¨ freshmeat is abolutely heaven !Better concentrating on sourceforge.net and on their rpm pakages. Rpm is certainly the way to go as you start with Linux. If you know the name of the software you want go to rpmfind.net and do a search ( just like google, you will discover that there are 100.000´s of packages just pick out the right ¨architecture¨ and away you go !Hope this is enough info for now. ;)Have fun exploring ! Guest LilBambi
I tend to gravitate mainly to rpmfind.net and pick RPMs for my particular Distro, or use an ftp site for the particular Distro. This is much saver for someone who is not that accustomed to Linux yet. Or for folks that mainly want to keep their system so they can install, upgrade and uninstall things more easily. If you start compiling things right away, you will find that you may end up reinstalling the system if you mess up something that's already installed or it conflicts with something you already have installed, and you didn't know if it will end up with conflicts, etc. that you may not be able to handle yet.Remember that RPM's and the RPM based Mandrake package manager are intended to make the whole install, upgrade to newer version, and uninstall situation much easier.Later when you learn more about Linux and understand the errors that compiling your own programs can come up with and how to fix the problem before continuing on, then you might want to try compiling. But you are better off taking it in baby steps, believe me. This is the voice of experience speaking
