Another reason for ditching Windows?

It seems some torrent providers are blocking Windows 10 users over privacy issue. This is an article from Zdnet on the issue. Seems MS might be trying to outdo Google with sharing your usage.

It seems they do have the technology built in to 10 but they will not use it except in extreme circumstances, so it is rumoured. You know what rumours are like. :whistling:

Just another MS "their OK" without any backing. If they can do it, they will do it. Period, exclamation point. :angry2: :angry2:

I found Scot Finnie's article a good read

http://www.computerw...windows-10.html

The terrible tech support story is one you could hear from customers of just about any PC maker. What I find more aggravating is that HP had many months of access to public betas of Windows 10. Its existing customers should be the top priority if the company wants to have future customers. HP also released a bunch of drivers on Aug. 7, but apparently most of those were not specific to Windows 10. HP's driver versions -- I found out later -- were not even up to date in all cases.

This is the Microsoft ecosystem's biggest problem. What's in it for HP to keep its drivers updated? It's a flawed system.

Me too. :shifty:

Same here. Makes be grateful that my mother's last OS will be win7, and since I stopped working, I'm solely linux. Even though I realize his problems were from dealing with an upgrade rather than a new install, the hoops he jumped through would be almost impossible for the average user. Edited by ebrke

For those with questions about privacy for the various services on Windows 10, this should be helpful: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/windows-privacy-faq

Not only does the FAQ explain what information is collected but also why. People need to use common sense. If someone chooses to use Cortana, they need to realize that there are functions such as speech that need to work. Information on how to clear data that is collected to make the services work is also included.

Windows 10 looks good and a clean install does do it justice.

The upgrade path as always can be a bit flaky. Several installs needed updated drivers for sound and microphone and then configuration for the sound and microphone before Cortana could be installed or enabled.

I like Windows 10. Better than Windows 8.0 or Windows 8.1. The jury is still out on whether I like it better or even as well as Windows 7.

I had the Beta installed in VirtualBox on my Mac and it worked very well.

I am holding off upgrading to Windows 10 even though I reserved my copy because my Optiplex Intel Dual Core with 4GB RAM, and a 2008 BIOS.

I am waiting to hear if others with my type of Dell Optiplex are having success going from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10. Here are my specs:

System: DELL GX 745 Optiplex Desktop - Windows 7 Pro

CPU/MB: Intel Dual Core Pentium D 3.4GHZ

RAM: 4 GB

Video: Intel Integrated/on-board graphcs

Sound: Built-in

HD: 80 GB

CD: DVD-RW

NIC: Built-in

Ethernet Controller - builtin

2008 BIOS

My husband's desktop is an Optiplex 745, refurb. It has been upgraded from XP to 32 bit Win 7 Pro, by the MS-certified refurbisher.

I ran CPU-z because I read under instructions for Win 10 to run, it needs SSE2, EM64 and VT-d or VT-x.

It lacks the VT entries and I suspect it is because of the integrated graphics which would be able to handle Directx12.

I think before you consider upgrading, you'd need to install a graphics card.

Also note that if you upgrade to 10 you will lose: Windows media Center, DVD playback, desktop gadgets, pre-installed games, USB connected floppy drives, and One Drive access. (We do use USB connected floppy drives on my husband's computers so upgrading his desktop is not a consideration). I'm getting him to use USB sticks but he does have quite a few files on lots of floppies so it takes time to get him completely moved over to the new way of using his storage devices.

I just discovered that I can't get into the BIOS on the Optiplex. Tapping F2 does nothing and Windows loads! I swapped out the keyboard and got into the BIOS. His computer is running v 2.3.1 from 5/21/07.

Used Dell Detect on the system and it reports the following in regard to Windows 10 - 1st item on the page:

Product not tested for Windows 10 upgrade

Dell has not confirmed that this product can upgrade to Windows 10. Some drivers, firmware, applications, and connected devices may not work as you would expect.

On that page regarding Optiplex computers:

The table below lists Dell OptiPlex computers that have been tested for upgrade to Windows 10. If your computer model is not listed, Dell is not testing the device, drivers have not been updated for that model, and Dell does not recommended an upgrade to Windows 10. If you wish to proceed with an upgrade to Windows 10 on an untested system, Microsoft provides information and support for upgrade through their http://www.windows.c...indows10upgrade"]upgrade website.

Looks like I will be keeping Windows 7 on this computer unless I specifically hear of success with this 64-bit Optiplex model and using VirtualBox on my Macbook Air to play with Windows 10.

I would much prefer to use Windows 10 natively but c'est la vie....Sigh

Dell isn't the only OEM not testing all devices. After all, they want to sell new devices to customers. As I quoted a Dell rep in OEM Supported Systems for Windows 10 Upgrade: "As per the update from Microsoft, all Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 systems should be eligible for the Windows 10 free upgrade. But, Dell will decide which systems Dell will validate and support with Windows 10."
