Lost and not found. Depedencies (broken) can't be found

Hi everone!

Well my Knoppix Linux is in a tizzy! I tried to install the "hplip" printer application for my HP 8600 all-in-one printer. I've tried everything, with no luckl So, guess what? One of you'se got to have the solution or I'm printerless.

In this case, Knoppix is running in a one gig USB memory stick. And no, not as a "live" version. This one has presence in the stick. It has built-in memory for daily computing. Turn if off, and come back again, and nothing is lost. It's giving my Acer Netbook a new life, without binding up like it usually does with WinXP.

However, this time, I'd like to be able to use the printer function in this OS. Here below, you will see the error mesages that I'm getting. If one of you is a Dick Tracey, and know the solution, kindly let me know!

apt-get -f install perl-base libperl5.14 libhpmud0 libsnmp15 printer-driver-hpcups

Reading package lists... Done

Building dependency tree

Reading state information... Done

perl-base is already the newest version.

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have

requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable

distribution that some required packages have not yet been created

or been moved out of Incoming.

The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

libperl5.14 : Depends: perl-base (= 5.14.2-21+deb7u1) but 5.18.2-7 is to be installed

E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

The stickler is the "broken packages" "held". Where are those broken packages hiding, so that I can strangle them!? I've tried everything using Synaptic, and when that didin't work, I started using "apt-get" and all available commands to delete those "held broken packages". The system can't handle it! Above, is just one of the examples of what I tried to do. I was trying to load missing depemdencies manually to see if that would work. Did that effort work? Of course not! Where are those broken packages "held"? How do you go about fixing this?

At first the error was that it couldn't unravel HPLIP, Then it's now progressed to what you see ablove.

Cheers!

I'd be curious to know how much memory you have left after an install of knoppix on a 1gb usbstick. When it's running, what does a #df command show? Even a frugal install with a persistence file (guessing that's what you really have) will eventually fill the usbstick, after which nothing will work quite right.

Be careful. You may find yourself in...

Your phtobucket is empty! You've been chasing dependencies for years with Slakware. You should know wherre those depemdencies are located and can be deleted.

I need to clarify something, I don't know what I was thinking, but the USB memory stick is a 32GB storage device. I went to look at it to freshen my memory, and while I touched it, it pulled out of the port. Lost Knoppix! But now I'm back!

Ok, you wanted to know how well it ran. Well, below, I'm posting the results of the "df" command.

df

Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on

rootfs 506916 26896 480020 6% /

udev 20480 0 20480 0% /dev

tmpfs 2097152 0 2097152 0% /dev/shm

root@Microknoppix:/#

There is still one more thing. How do I cure the problem? Where do I find those "held broken dependencies"? What do I do with them to make things right? The computer will not proceed until this is taken care of. It will not install the printer applicaton.

Cheers!

Oddly enough, I've never visited Dep H3LL with Slackware. I did take a bit of a journey through there in Debian one time, though. It was an adventure that every Linux user should experience at least once. ;)

The error is saying that libperl5.14 depends on perl-base version 5.14x but the knoppix repos only have the newer 5.18x version of the package. This is more a dependency issue with knoppix versioning than anything you did on your end. I do not know why libperl would need that exact version and not accept a later verion. Perhaps you could try installing libperl5.18

BTW why are using Knoppix? Sure, it can be installed but it is made to run as a livecd. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knoppix

I used to also use knoppix as a live version sometimes back. But, I find no reason not to install it now-- It is made to be used either live, or installable in either a standard hard drive, and/or in a flash drive. Since the installation capability has expanded, I find no reason not to use that OS this way.

It has a stable KDE manager, and quite a large range of Debian applications to choose from.

The setup for the OS display layout is more on the old-fashion mode. And that makes it very easy to find what one is looking for. No fancy-candy setup. It is pretty snappy to respond to commands, and there is no problem for the OS to translate the entire thing from German to English on the fly. The OS, although not very popular, sits very well in it's current niche.

I don't base a Linux OS on it's name; I base it on it's capability, and stability. Currently, this one fits the bill. Besides, considereing that it's running in a 32GB USB flash drive, and it's a 32bit OS, means that I can simply pocket the memory stick, and take it with me anywhere. It will run in either 32 or 64 bit machines. That makes it a global OS.

Except for that fiasco with the dependency problem, I've been using it for several weeks now and have no complaints. I'm using it now in my Acer netbook, to write this. Knoppix has given this netbook a new lease on life. It runs very smoothly and no delays, as compared with WinXP. With XP it was dragging it feet, and slowing down to a teeth grinding pace. Not counting the frequent delays for Windows to bootup after some updates.

I might also add, that sometimes prayers help. I spent a long time trying to fix the dependency problem and trying to install hplip for the HP printer. I had rebooted a few times without any changes. Then one time, I threw my hands up in the air, gave up and rebooted, and the miracle of repair occured. It somehow healed itself! The problem is gone, the HP printer is working and printing from Knoppix. Go figure!

To make things clear, I'm not a Knoppix junky. If it goes sour, it will be out, like the others before, that stopped behaving. This ia merely a report of my current experience with this OS, and it's relation to the Acer netbook.

Cheers!
