This thread was branched off from "Show Us Your GNU/Linux Desktop".

I was wanting to post a few screenshots but was having problems

getting the posted image to scale down.

This thread deals with the issue of scaling posted images in a forum post.

Any ideas on how to scale the posted image?

TIA

The images for posts is generally limited to 540x540 by the forum software. I am not sure it is actually doing what it is supposed to do however. Let's do a test. I put in an image that is actually 1024x and let's see if I don't manually adjust to 540x whether the software will limit it as is intended to 540x:

It did limit the size by about 1/2, but not to the 540x that is set as the max for images in posts in the forum software.

I will go back and manually resize the image to 540x within the post so it's not incorrect. When I used this picture on another topic, I chose the 500x image rather than this 1024x image which I used for this test.

Hope that helps.

Note I have adjusted within the posting, the image size down to about 540x.

So if I post an image that is too large...the forum software will automatically scale it down for me?

On further inspection that appears to be the case on the image in the post about using the mp3 player.

It is originally at 1366x768. The image does appear to be scaled down and when I click on it I get the larger image.

Adding the larger size images to my post above about dark themes....

the image in the post and in the popup appear to be the same size (640x480).

They do not appear to be scaled.

Just curious about how to get it to scale down more than it is now.

Any ideas?

Just upload it to imagebam.com and choose the scale size. I usually use 250 to 350 pixels depending on the size I want. Then after you upload it, copy the BB code that is shown to your post.

BTW How did you get the forum's background to black?

This is much better.

For the dark forums background I am using the Stylish plugin

in Firefox with the Midnight Surfing - Global Dark Style.

It make every page I visit in Firefox dark.

Josh's plan is much easier as you don't have to worry about it so much.

But you can resize any image in any post after the URL has been provided and it is in the editor to meet Forum Rules.

Just choose a corner (bottom right is generally what I use), then hold/drag the corner of the image toward the upper/left to resize. NOTE: The Editor will show the size as you resize in a little gray box along side as you resize so you can get it to be approximately 540x like I did to match the Forum Rules and still be large enough for folks to see what's in the image.

Also, if you like a larger image, you can then click the image, click the URL icon and add a link to the larger image that will give more detail and when someone clicks on the image, it will take them to the larger image.

Thanks for that information. I was not aware.

I can scale the image in the editor.

However, when I save the changes...

it does not scale down as far I scaled it down in the editor.

The image in the saved post is larger.

I had scaled it down much smaller.

See post #1457 (I can't get the image to scale down any smaller).

As was noted when I put in the 1024x image, it only downsized it to about 50%. There may be some sort of limitation on that. Not sure. I am checking into it with IPS to see why it does that. I would suggest using an image that is the right size or use image ban if you have huge images that won't auto size to meet Forum Rules.

alphaomega, try to add a picture again. I think I got it. I found a topic on IPS about it. I had only set it in one place and had left it to auto resize but didn't specify. Now it should do it to 540px.

Feel free to test it.

I will test it to with my 1024x image again to be sure.

Yes! It did it when I clicked Post. So it is now working! Yea!

NOTE: It doesn't look like it will when you add it but it does it automatically when you post.

Thanks for your patience as I figured it out!

I have managed to scale the image down a little more but the resulting

image in the post is still larger than the size I actually scaled it to.

Scaling appears to wok for me when I am in advanced editing mode

(where the insert link/image work).

That is probably how it is supposed to work and I just need

to make sure I am in advanced editing mode in order to scale

the posted image. I know I had another problem when it comes

to the advanced editor vs the basic editor.

P.S. At the time I tested it when it would not scale, I was in the more editing options

where there is a save changes option vs a post option. Scaling the image down

when there is a save option appears to work but it does not seem to scale the

image as far down as I actually scaled it.

Thanks for the info.

Cheers

The image I inserted above was originally 758px wide. The forum software automatically resized it when I saved the post. I did not resize anything. It did it on it's own.

There must be something than I am not quite understanding.

Right now I'm thinking it works like so:

If I post an image larger than 540x540 the forum software will scale it down to within 540x540.

Or I can scale down the image as you explained by grabbing the bottom right corner of the image

in the editor and moving toward the upper left corner of the image.

The original posted image only caught my attention because it was much larger

in the post after the forum upgrade. After the upgrade the original image 1366x768

was still scaled down but not as much as it was before. It was larger than 540x540.

That is when I switched the image until I could figure out how to scale it back down

to around 250x150.

Attempting to scale it down in the editor to around 250x150...when I post

the message...the image only scales down to 540x304. I can not get it

to scale down any smaller.

Of course, now that I have written all this...it will probably work if I try again.

Nope. I can not get it to scale down any smaller when dragging the corner

of the image in the editor.

You guys need to split off this entire sub-topic about image resizing and move it to the Tips/Tricks Forum Feedback area.

Don't make me come back here and scold you again. ;)

Will use this post to summarize the added posts from another topic.

Done. Split and merged. Now it's here and folks can just read it over -- I couldn't actually do anything with it so I have my summary post at the top.

Maybe alphaomega could do that in his first post by editing it?

As posted on the original thread:

If this were my personal board, I wouldn't care much. However, on a tech support type board like this one, it's really confusing to the readers to see shredded off-topic threads when they're searching for solutions to their issues. Granted, they wouldn't be searching too much on this thread for solutions, but...

Oh, and never let it be said that I'm just being a jack-booted thug staffer... I am OFTEN guilty of steering threads into the ditch around here. :(

Okay, thanks for splitting the thread.

The only issue I still can't figure out is:

How to scale an image down to 250x150 by dragging the

bottom right corner and moving to the top left.

Here is a screenshot of what it looks like when I'm in

the editor and scaling the image:

2igj0wj.jpg

This is what it looks like once I actually post the message:

1o8w3m.png

So how do I scale it down even more?

I would think that going down to a thumbnail is not necessary if it's resizing it for you to a workable size.

Likely the picture is just too big to start with. You are starting with a picture that is 1366 × 768 pixels.

But let's see:

1o8w3m.png

OK resized to approximately 300x ... let's see if it stays there.

Nope. It goes to the 540x.

1o8w3m.png

OK, using the full editor, I resized it to approx. 300x and centered it.

Let's see what happens.

Nope. You have to have a thumbnail to get a thumbnail. That picture is just way too big. The software knows it's bigger than 540x and auto resizes to 540x.

OK, let's try a real thumbnail image and see what happens.

Two that are smaller than the required size:

7084750037_49041077c3_t.jpg

Thumbnail 100x (I expect this will be fine with no resizing)

7084750037_49041077c3_n.jpg

320x image ( I expect this to be fine as is with no resizing)

And now one that is larger than the forum required size:

7084750037_49041077c3_z.jpg

640x image (which should be auto resized to 540x)

Yep. The one I expected to be resized, was resized to: 505px × 335px and the others were left as they were.

Hope that helps alphaomega. :teehee:

Looks like it reized it down to 540x to me.

Exactly.

I tried to scale down the smaller image in post #20 even smaller

(original is within 540x540) and it did not work.

I tried to scale down the larger image in post #20 to within 250x150

(original is 1366x768) and it only gets scaled down to within 540x540.

So trying to scale an image by dragging the bottom right corner

and moving to the upper left corner in the editor only scales the

image while in the editor.

Once the image is posted it is not scaled down as it was in the editor.

It appears to follow these rules:

If an image is over 540x540 it gets scaled down to within 540x540.

If an image is already within 540x540 it is shown unscaled.

So the option to scale an image in the editor by dragging the corner

would appear to be pointless.

I wanted to scale something larger than 540x540 to something

way smaller than 540x540. It appeared to be possible using

the editor and dragging the corner of the image but it is not.

P.S. just caught your post before mine...

Yes, it's clear.

If I want to scale the image that small I have to scale it myself as the

forum software appears to only scale things larger than 540x540.

Cheers and Thanks

Well, it was not pointless until we changed it to 540x to prevent images going too large. Then it would resize them but if it was too large only 50% max.

If someone uses images that are too big, the image will now be auto resized to meet Forum Rules max of 540x regardless.

If it is a smaller than 540x image, the image's size will be honored.

or use Josh's way, or my way at Flickr or another site that will auto resize to thumbnail as well as the normal image size.

You can always still click on the image and link to the larger image regardless of the size thumbnail up to 540x if you want folks to be able to see the larger image.

It's good to know how the software works. It does work differently than the old software did. But it is a very workable system. Just need to know it's limitations is all.
