WinPatrol and Windows Update

I have the latest version of Win Patrol Plus 32.0.X

I keep getting WP notifications that my system wants to switch Windows Update from "Check and Install Automatically" to "Don't Check at All."

I keep rejecting the change but it's really annoying. Anyone else noticed this? I've run Malware Bytes Scans but didn't see anything.

No but then on 5 computers (4 Win 7 and an XP) that I have v32 Pro installed, I do not have Windows updates set to "Check and install Automatically". My setting in Win 7 is "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them". In XP I run MS update then click on the Custom button.

A long-time feature of WinPatrol is to "Let you know if your AutoUpdate or UAC settings change". Because you are clicking "Yes" to restore your original setting and, thus, block the change, it does sound as though something is attempting to change the settings without your permission.

Have you made any recent changes to your computer? Installed any new programs? (You could also check the "Recent" tab in WinPatrol.)

If you haven't already, double-check your Windows Update settings to confirm the settings are correct. You can disable repeating alerts from the WinPatrol Options tab. Click "Hide Alert Messages" located at the bottom right and check the box "Suppress Continuous Alerts based on first response."

The only thing I've installed lately is an updated Bidefender Internet Security 2015. I get updates to Steam occasionally.

I changed to "Download updates but let me decide whether to install them." As expected WP spotted this and I accepted the change.

Norton was known to change Windows Update settings also. Here's an example of where it happened with Outpost Security Suite: Windows Update | MalwareTips.com. All the scans were "clean", no malware, system checked out fine.

Have you run the "Enhanced" Quick Vulnerability Scanner, described by BitDefender as

With a single click, the vulnerability scanner automatically warns of vulnerable or outdated software, missing Windows security patches, and potentially unsafe system settings.

Perhaps the "enhancement" is what is changing your settings.

As a slightly O/T post, WinPatrol notified me this morning that a new version 32.0.2014.5 was available for download. I have not, as yet, installed this new version...

There were some issues with v32.0.2014 (long discussion topic at LandzDown here: WinPatrol v32.0.2014 From Ruiware Released!). Those issues were fixed after members from LzD provided information to Bret and v32.0.2014.5 was released July 20.

Note: Those issues were in no way related to the Windows Update notifications you received after updating BitDefender.

It was great to see everyone working together to get that working right with the colors.

I now have a Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit again that I can help test it on for future version tests needed.

I think I may have found the problem.

Bitdefender is causing the update change I believe, not a virus or malware. BD has an Autopilot setting that makes changes to the system if you run a video full screen or play a game. One of these changes is apparently to suspend updates and this is what WinPatrol is remarking on.

I have switched off Autopilot and just opted for a Standard Mode for Bitdefender and we'll see how that works. So far so good.

These "Internet Security" programs get more feature laden and more intrusive with each release. All the more reason to run Linux if you can. Bitdefender used to be a relatively efficient and lightweight antivirus-firewall combo. Now it's got everything from malware scanning, wallet app, special browser for banking, CCleaner functions...Oy,,.Norton 2.0.

I passed the information about the Autopilot feature of BitDefender to Bret so he is aware and can advise other WinPatrol users who may contact him via the support address.

  • 2 weeks later...

No problems at all with Windows Update switching after a couple of weeks - on two different Windows PCs that run Bitdefender and Win Patrol. So the problem is definitely solved.

Thanks to the information you provided here, I was able to help someone at another forum with the same problem with BitDefender.
