I could easily have asked you what is the point of creating a thread to celebrate the fact that you've posted 250 messages. The reason I posted it is because I think it's true, and this thread is an appropriate place to post it. Over the years, I've seen many good forums ruined when people start competing with each other to achieve higher rankings instead of posting useful messages.I don't think that's what you or anyone else here is trying to do, but if we create an atmosphere in which we encourage and celebrate people posting as many times as possible and chasing after each other's rankings, we will end up with a lot of garbage posts instead of the high quality posts that we've enjoyed up until now. I guess the point of an off topic forum, is for off topic posts... I'm not trying to make it a race... just having fun with it... IMO, the rankings are worthless... if you want my complete opinion on them, I'd actually like to see them go (and the post numbers be hidden to the member profile only). Then nobody would be any more "helpful/important" than anybody else. But the rankings are here, so may as well have fun with them :)I don't want to start WWIII here, so I'll let this be, and not take it personally. Would that have made it more clear? It was a joke!!! I thought the long row of smilies was the giveaway there... One thing for everyone to keep in mind... because our only form of communcation on this board is text, we have to not only convey our message, but our true meaning in our text. True feeling isn't very expressable in smilies... We have no tone of voice, no other non-verbal clues to go from... I'll be the first one to admit that I'm guilty of problems on both ends of this... Not only do I not always do a good job of conveying my true feelings, but I also have a hard time reading other people's. I sometimes take things that don't mean any harm and read more into them... I'm probably guilty of that here... If I've offended anyone with my posts, I'm sorry... I'll try to be as respectful as I can, and not just post for the sake of posting... (which I don't feel like I've done anyway). To be completely honest, I never expected this post to get much attention... I was sitting at home that night, getting ready to go do something, when I noticed I had 249 posts... I couldn't find anywhere else to make a worthy post, so I decided to "waste" a post if you will. I made the post, and then I left... when I came back, there was one or two posts. The thread died for a day or so, and I hoped it would stay that way... but it kept coming back... and now look where it went... completely different idea... :)I don't judge anyone based on their post numbers... it's pretty obvious who knows their stuff around here... it doesn't take a number or a title to show that... Therefore, I have fun with the post numbers and titles... if they don't mean anything to me, but they're there anyway, I have fun with them... no harm no foul right? As I stated in my reply, that was not my intention at all. Since you had created this thread to "celebrate" your achievement of a new rank, I was trying to make what I thought was a relevant and important point that I hope that post counts and rankings don't become the reason for people to post here, like they have on many, many other forums. In my later reply, I also tried to point out that, although I don't think you are personally trying to compete for rankings by posting garbage messages, we would all be wise to avoid giving the impression that we reward or celebrate post counts or rankings, because many, many, many users on other forums do try to compete for rankings by posting garbage messages, and I would hate to see that happen here.Ryan, if it matters to you, I think that the vast majority of your posts are knowledgable and helpful to other members of these forums.
