abarbarian
https://ghost.org/features/ "Ghost will take your boring blog to the next astral plane ... it looks so darn beautiful." TechCrunch https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/ghost/ http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2013-05/10/ghost If you want to blog in 2013, there are two main options available to you. The first is a massive, sprawling Wordpress installation, customised with endless plugins, themes, analytics and settings. The second is a stripped-down Tumblr -- minimalist, but with very little way of making it your own. John O'Nolan, former deputy head of user interface at Wordpress, believes there's a third way. A way that gives you plenty of control over your content, but doesn't lose you in a thicket of plugins. "The internet has come a long way in the last 10 years, but blogging software hasn't," he says. So he's launching an open-source publishing platform, called Ghost. Strange as it may seem this is not a Halloween prank post.

abarbarian
If anyone fancies trying bloging with Ghost then Kite is offering free hosting for one blog. Hey, I'm one of the co-founders from Kite. We seriously love ghost; it is an awesome blog engine. We decided to give everyone a free box for hosting their ghost blog. On top of hosting, Kite is a tool for developers; they can use it to edit the themes and the Node.js code without having to setup everything on your computer. We hope this will make contributing to the ghost codebase much easier. We'd love to see ghost getting better and better, and we even setup a welcome page for ghost You can find us here: https://www.runkite.com/ghost

However, I am looking forward to reading at your new Ghost blog. Hurry up and write something. I'm not getting any younger, you know. I use wordpress but self-host my blog for the admin features. Granted I am basically just wasting space on the interweb as I rarely post anything at all. Blimey I would think I had won the big prize if I could earn $90 over here at present. You have to understand, though. I earn that $90/hr for about two or three hours a month. That ain't makin' the cats fat, if you know what I mean. Now, if I could do $90/hr for 8 hours a day and 4 days a week, then I'd be a happy camper, or caravaner, as you British folks call it.

Well at least you got the second rule of working down pat. 2) Short hours for big bucks. An we do have "happy campers" though it is a bit of cynical term over here. Campers holiday in tents an most of em are not happy about it, more grin and bear it.

abarbarian
ghosting it (2015) After 1723 posts and several years of use, I've switched my blog from the proprietary, Google-owned-and-hosted Blogger to a self-hosted instance of the free software Ghost blogging application. If you are reading this in one of the blog agregators I'm carried on, you may have seen some old postings showing up as a result; apologies if this happens. I've been watching the Ghost project for a while waiting for it to reach the point I could reasonably use it for my needs. It got there recently and I had the opportunity to move to a new server recently so took the plunge. Nice article on why Ghost is good for you. Everyone needs a Ghost in the shell don't they ?

abarbarian
My last post says it all really. Time flies. Here is some rather more current news. https://blog.ghost.org/journalism/ This year we're very excited to be dedicating our entire 10 person full-time Ghost team to helping grow three independent publications, along with $45,000 in resources toward their efforts. We're calling it Ghost for Journalism. But I'm getting ahead of myself, let me explain: Next month, we're going to release Ghost 1.0 – which represents a significant milestone as we acknowledge that we've now built everything that the first version of the platform was supposed to accomplish. It also serves one other purpose, which is a major version bump to signify the breaking changes we're about to make in order to set the stage for what's next. https://ghost.org/journalism/ Ghost is a fully open source platform for independent publishers, founded three and half years ago after a runaway $300,000 Kickstarter campaign. Since then it has been downloaded over 1.2million times by thousands of publishers from Square, Tinder and Zappos, to Vevo, Mozilla and many others. Last year, Sir Richard Branson called it "incredible" and "a very important idea". Now, as our technology has grown and been successfully used by so many personal and company blogs, we’re turning our primary focus to where our heart and our mission has always really been: Journalism. We’ve created a $45,000 journalism development program to help build new and exciting publications We’re looking for 3 passionate teams to work with for the next year, and help them create the web’s next important destinations for great journalism. As well as significant financial support, we’re offering up our full engineering team to help build and release the technology which they need. Here’s what we’re looking for We’re in search of teams who are experienced, knowledgable and passionate about one or more of the following: Local, political, social, cultural and investigative reporting Scientific, economic and philosophical analysis Journalism about journalism (ooo meta) Memberships, subscriptions & audience engagement New revenue models for journalism Use of emerging tech like chatbots, data, VR & APIs Ideally, we’re looking for a small but experienced team of writers who have recently started up a new publication, have big ambitions, important ideas, and clear thoughts about what technology is needed to reach their goals. That being said, we’d love to hear from anyone who feels like this could be a great fit for them. Got any bright ideas folks.

raymac46
Being a fat cat retiree (cough! cough!) I have not thought of monetizing my blog in any way. BTW here's a shameless link. As far as I can see unless you are a Kardashian or a financial blogger with a huge following like Calculated Risk, you ain't gonna make any cash as a blogger. I do have my own domain because then I can install my own blog theme and control ads (I don't have any.) It isn't really that much harder than using wordpress.com. I use my blog mostly to keep track of life experience for my friends on Facebook. For me a blog has taken the place of a personal website. No HTML or any weird programming.

zlim
My mother's sewing machine went for $5 at auction. No one wants a big desk cabinet sewing machine either. If she had kept her old reliable treadle foot Singer, that would have brought a lot more.
raymac46
I did check with my webhost (Webserve Canada) and it's possible to use Softaculous on the site to install Ghost. I'm using Wordpress right now and with the Bayse theme it's pretty simple. There are only about 200 bloggers using Bayse worldwide so it isn't as generic as say TwentyTwelve (default Wordpress theme.)
