TLP

If you're running Linux on a laptop You might consider installing TLP. It's a power management system that extends the battery life between charges and makes the battery last longer. It's basically an install and forget set of tools but you can tweak it if needed.

I found out about it in the Arch Wiki but it's available for Debian as well. If you have a Thinkpad there are a couple of additional packages you can install to optimize things further.

I installed TLP on my Thinkpad 430 and the battery life went from 4 hours to 5.5. Not bad for a 4 year old battery.
