HOWTO Configure media sources and install programs (Thunderbird) in Mandriva 2008Open the Mandriva Control Center:kuvakaappaus199cw5.pngFirst, choose "Distribution Sources" (when you do this for the first time, things might look a bit different from the below screen shots... but the "drill" is the same):3036921877_82bae76f3d_o.pngYes:kuvakaappaus201re0.pngNext, you choose the mirror location... when in doubt, Netherlands and nluug is a splendid choice. ( NOTE: Mirror is out of sync please choose ftp.free.fr )kuvakaappaus202hy9.png Now you should have repositories pretty much like in the below pic (your numbering'll most likely go from 0-1 to 0-12):kuvakaappaus206mw6.pngWhat was the... ah, Thunderbird! Back to control center main menu, and "Manage Software":kuvakaappaus207ha7.pngEither serch for "Thunderbird" (the package is called "mozilla-thunderbird") or find it "manually"; Networking -> Mail. "Tick" the box... the green ball appears. Click "Apply" to start download/install.kuvakaappaus208im4.pngThat's it, really. You'll find Thunderbird in Start Menu in "Internet". Oh: when you install software this way, every single program you install will be kept up-to-date automatically.

HOWTO configure display resolution (1280x800) in Mandriva 2008 running in VirtualBoxsnapshot2qj5.th.pngHit the "Configure your computer" icon (see above)... root password prompt:snapshot3wy2.pngChoose "Hardware", and, once in there, "Set up the graphical server":snapshot5di1.th.pngsnapshot6oq3.th.pngFirst, let's configure "Monitor": Choose (unlike I B) ) "Flat panel 1280x800":snapshot7ce2.th.pngNext, resolution... Choose "24 bits", hit the "resolution bar" (yours saying, "1024x768")... goes something like:snapshot10uu7.th.pngWhich resolution to choose? None of the above; I would choose the "native" resolution, 1280x800, and run Mandriva "Full screen" without any "VBox controls" visible. When you start "VirtualMandy", hit <right Ctrl> + <F> to go full screen, and whenver you want to have access to controls while using your Mandy, hit <right ctrl> + <Home>. To get 1280x800, in the above list, choose "Other"... there you have it:snapshot11zd0.th.pngBach in the "Graphical Server Main Menu" (your settings should now be "Flat Panel, 1280x800" and "1280x800, 24bpp"), choose "Test". If everything is OK, you'll see rather a psychedelic full screen display of all the colours of a rainbow. In that case, accept new settings.snapshot6oq3.th.pngExit the Control center. Log out. Log back in. New resolution should now be in use.

i sure do like this virtualbox (VB) program. i guess it's called an emulator. i'm really fascinated with running multiple operating systems and since discovering this outstanding program i've been in emulation heaven. as you can see from these screenshots i have quite a few os's installed. i'm running VB on mandriva linux 2007.1 which makes this my host os. each of the other distros are called guests and run in a "virtual machine". VB runs on the 3 major platforms windows, mac, linux. i only know it on linux so i don't know how well it functions on the other platforms but the reviews are good. a big feature not yet supported is 3d acceleration because VB is limited to a generic graphics driver.other than that all of the distros shown in my screenshots are fully functioning. it isn't hard to get started. there are only a few decisions to make when creating a virtual machine and each option is explained very well in the user documentation. these slideshows show how i set up my virtual machines and also how i learn to install and use some of the distros. it is in my opinion the best way to explore a different environment or to have access to something that is only available on another os.VirtualBox How-To ( Slideshow ) Installing Slackware 12.0 ( Virtualbox slideshow )Installing D Small Linux 3.4 ( Virtualbox slideshow ) Installing FreeSpire 2.0 ( Virtualbox slideshow ) Installing PCLos 2007 ( Virtualbox slideshow ) Installing Wolvix 1.1.0 ( Virtualbox slideshow )Installing Debian 4.0 ( Virtualbox slideshow )Installing gOS ( Virtualbox slideshow )Installing VectorLinux 5.9 Gold ( Virtualbox slideshow )Installing PCLinuxOS Gnome ( Virtualbox slideshow )Installing DreamLinux 3.0 ( Virtualbox slideshow )Installing VectorLinux 5.9 soho Live preview ( Virtualbox slideshow )Installing Paldo ( Virtualbox slideshow )Installing Blag 90001 ( Virtualbox slideshow )Installing KiwiLinux ( Virtualbox slideshow )Installing Xandros 4.0 ( Virtualbox slideshow )Installing Slackware 12.2 ( Virtualbox slideshow )Installing Debian 5.0 Lenny ( Virtualbox slideshow )

That's a first! Douze points! This means you can move stuff between host and guest OS using clipboard... or you can set up "shared" folders... plus, you can get full screen resolution. Me, I prefer "one step down; my (Ubuntu) host uses 1280x1024, so I set guests to 1152×864:kuvakaappaus176gu4.th.png
