I ran across this article earlier this morning and thought it was worth mentioning:

Quote

Google stunned the tech community this morning with the news that it will acquire Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion. The company insisted that Motorola will continue as a separate company and that Android will remain an open platform, but the first question for many was how might this affect other handset makers with a major Android portfolio, like Samsung and HTC?According to Google's Andy Rubin, the major Android players were "very enthusiastic" about the deal and the rather canned responses posted on Google's Web site from Samsung, Sony Ericsson, HTC, and LG said all four companies "welcome" the news. Many in the analyst and tech community, however, greeted that sentiment with a nice, big, "Yeah right."....
http://www.pcmag.com...,2391093,00.aspGoogle owning both the hardware and the software? Hmmm that sounds like another company we all know of..... What are your thoughts?

True, fixed :thumbsup:Actually is that not the majority of Motorola's business anyway? I know they make other things but their cell phones and tablets are their major products.

No. Motorola is split their company a while back between Motorola Mobility and Motorola Solutions. The latter is by far the older and more of the main line of Motorola (radio systems, media systems, hardware devices, etc).Clicky --> http://www.motorola.com/us=====Ah... we were posting at the same time. :sweatingbullets:

Motorola knew Google was desperate for the patents. They held out and extracted a premium price for the crown jewels. $12.5 billion is almost all of Google's profit over the last two years. Remember, Google was only willing to pay pi billion dollars for Nortel's patents.

In the World of Wireless, Itís All About Patents (DealB%k at NYTimes):

Quote

Corporate warfare over patents is not new. Companies historically preferred to reach truces, choosing to cross-license their intellectual property rather than risking bigger losses in court. But patent battles are no longer waged between just two competitors, like Intel and Advanced Micro Devices. Platforms like Android and Windows Phone 7 are built upon a handful of device makers, adding more players with different stakes at risk.

I got a chuckle from Ed's article, Google's coalition speaks with one voice | ZDNet.  When reading those comments, it certainly is evident Google is giving orders.See http://android-press-release.com/

Yeah, would sure seem so. Reminds me of other huge players and what they have done in the past under similar circumstances...Google needs to stop trying to imitate those other huge companies and do what's right/not evil.

Something's gotta give in all this patent crap. Between patent trolls and companies buying up other companies just for their "portfolios" and the companies being granted patents for ridiculously generic things, we (as consumers) end up losing. Aren't patents supposed to foster innovation? It seems all they are fostering at this point is huge bank accounts for lawyers. ;)

Got that right! It's a daggone tragedy to see that this is becoming the business plan of so many companies, and some that should know better and have been real creators of either hardware and/or software in the past ... something they could be proud of.
