raymac46 Posted January 7, 2016 Share Posted January 7, 2016 Looking for a possible alternative to Bitdefender Internet Security suite. I have about 4 months left on my licence. I love the anti-malware and firewall performance but sometimes Bitdefender can be really annoying. Lately BD has blocked installation of AMD driver updates and now it won't allow VirtualBox to launch. I would like to find a suitable replacement - Norton is out of the question (bloatware) and I had trouble with McAfee not doing its job. I'm willing to pay for a good security suite. Suggestions? As I said I have a few more months to make up my mind. raymac46 Posted January 8, 2016 Author Share Posted January 8, 2016 A little Googling has indicated that the Bitdefender-Virtualization glitch is a "feature" of Windows 10. Bitdefender plays nice with VBox if you are using Windows 7 as a host. I'll hang on a bit and see if the Bitdefender techs can fix this. I do like Bitdefender and have used it for years. raymac46 Posted February 15, 2016 Author Share Posted February 15, 2016 Well I have now switched my Internet security over to ESET. I had more problems with Bitdefender blocking another AMD install. I put in a ticket with Bitdefender about it and although I was served by a very nice tech support guy I was not able to convince him that BD and AMD had a compatibility problem. He wanted me to uninstall Malware Bytes - which I know works fine with Bitdefender. Then he suggested changing my old BD licence to a new email and web based licence, and uninstalling BD 2015 and installing BD 2016. All of this just treats the symptoms in my view. Anyway once I got BD 2015 uninstalled the web based system gave me no option to either transform my licence or install the new 2016 Internet Security suite. At this point I gave up and just switched over to ESET. Question for ESET users. 2 actually. I set up the firewall to operate in a trusted network as I am behind an NAT router. Is this the correct thing to do? Second do you set up a smart scan as opposed to a complete scan as a general rule and what do you include in it? goretsky Posted February 16, 2016 Share Posted February 16, 2016 Hello, If you manage the local network and the devices on it, you can certainly set the LAN to Trusted. The only situations I can think of where that would be an issue are when you are on someone else's network (like a school dormitory) or you constantly have friends and family coming over and using the network with devices you don't manage. Usually, the latter can be managed by setting up a guest wireless network, but not all routers have that capability. The smart scan basically tells the scanning engine to skip looking at older, unchanged common files (like parts of the operating system) after the first initial full scan. The cache of what gets skipped is not persistent, so if you restart the computer, a full scan occurs, and then it uses that data to determine what to skip on subsequent scans. At least, that's how it worked when the feature was initially introduced; I would imagine it has evolved a bit in the last few versions.
