securitybreach
The Mandriva company is being liquidated It is with sadness in our hearts that we inform you today, May 27, about the termination of the French Mandriva company, which is currently in the process of being liquidated, according to a notice posted on the societe.com website. For those of you who are not in the loop, Mandriva was a French company responsible for the Mandriva Linux operating system, which was derived from the Mandrake Linux and Conectiva Linux distributions, the former being based on Red Hat Linux. Despite the fact that the Mandriva company, which had over 16 years of activity and a workforce of 10 to 19 employees, generated €553,000 ($600,000) in revenue in 2013, it would appear that was not enough for it to shine in 2015. It is a known fact that the French company that gave us Mandriva Linux had financial problems in the last years, as several employees quit to form the non-profit Mageia Foundation that delivers the Mageia Linux operating system, a fork of Mandriva Linux. Jean-Manuel Croset, the CEO of Mandriva updated the information on the societe.com website with a note that the company is in the process of being liquidated. Located in Paris, France, Mandriva was specialized in the industry of publishing system software and network.,, http://news.softpedi...campaign=buffer

Hedon James
I have to give props to Mandriva, as it was the first Linux distro I learned about (more like "heard" about) circa 2007-2008ish. It was my first hint that you could get rid of Windows and replace it with SOMETHING ELSE! I didn't understand anything else about it, other than it was possible. So I guess technically, Mandriva gets the credit for planting the seed that sent me down the wormhole. Ironically, I thought Mandriva was very polished and user-friendly, but it wasn't for me. I never could get on with it, which is just as well, as I think it's gone under and been re-saved, forked, and rebranded 3-4 times since then. What's the over-under on how long it takes for Mandriva to be resurrected, if only with another name change?
securitybreach
Technically Mandrake (name changed to Mandriva) was my first distro but only for one week or so and then I quickly moved to Slackware (thanks to Bruno for helping me to install it). This was back in 2002 and believe me, Linux was a completely different beast than it is now. I had to recompile my kernel and such just to get my pcmcia wireless card to work. Good thing I am a computer geek as most people would of given up at that point. I hate to see Mandriva go as it was my first distro and was Bruno's favorite one. Things do change but Debian and Slackware have managed to stay around since 1993. It is a shame that Mandriva could not.....
crp
my first reaction : WOW! this is a surprise to me, i had no idea they were so close to the edge. Maybe it was more of 'tired of this' than a money issue?
BarryB
Mandriva as we knew it hasnt been around for awhile now, Mandriva went strictly commerical a few yars ago with most of the developers "breaking off: as the article says forming Mageia and then more company changes and another fork OpenMandriva formed. Regardless of Mandriva problems they are still around. Dont think Mandriva as a company will return this time. In 2003 after flopping around with several distros, Bruno "suggested" I try Mandrake and for 12 years I have ran it, from Mandrake to Magiea (along with others) but always had systems with it. To me, Mageia would be the "most" Mandrake like fork..and is my main OS across most my systems. Anyway, as a company Im not all that surprised Mandriva failed, it always seemed to struggle with a business direction..

ebrke
Things do change but Debian and Slackware have managed to stay around since 1993. It is a shame that Mandriva could not..... Although I'm one of the few who runs it here, I believe SuSE has been around nearly that long (wasn't it related to Slackware back in the day?). EDIT: Okay, found it on wikipedia: In 1994, in support with Patrick Volkerding, Slackware scripts were translated into German, which was marked as the first release of S.u.S.E. Linux 1.0 distribution. It was shipped first on floppies, and then on CDs Edited May 28, 2015 by ebrke
zlim
I have a boxed set of Mandrake 6.0 dated 1999 so that was when I thought about doing something with linux.
V.T. Eric Layton
The very first Linux that I ever had my hands on was a set of floppies with Mandrake on them. This was around 2000, I think. I never installed them. It would take 6 more years of MS WIndows frustrations and aggravations before a conspiracy of online friends (Sweet Lou, Angeldust, and Urmas) would get me to download and install Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake. Coincidentally, this was also the date of my registering here at Scots (at the behest of Urmas). I distro-farmed for a few weeks initially in 2006, but was immediately smitten by Slackware, thus fulfilling Bruno Knaapen's prediction, "You'd make a good Slacker." Thanks brother Bruno. I shall never forget you, my friend.
securitybreach
"You'd make a good Slacker." Thanks brother Bruno. I shall never forget you, my friend. INDEED!!! Yes, I meant to yell that. Through his forthcoming and willingness to help others, Bruno taught all of us(well the ones that were here back then) the whole whole idea of opensource and giving back to the community. I am not much of coder (hope to be more in the future if I can get off my butt and learn more), so I choose to give back by spreading the idea of open source/Linux and helping others as others have helped me along my journey That said, Man, I wish I had the patience Bruno had, hehe
BarryB
Hey Breach, good to see you Guys/Gals too!! I sometimes wonder what would have happened to my Linux adventure if I had not have stumbled into SFNL and into Bruno. It is amazing the changes in the opensource community over the last decade +. When I first started RTM was common guidence ( only problem was most of the manuals seemed to be written for folks that already knew what they were doing) and most forums ran the same way. SFNL and Bruno(and others here)were different. Though still a geeky group, the time was taken to explain linux in terms I could understand , and Bruno seemed to me to have the talent to quickly determine individual skill sets and talk to those skills. Bruno not only"suggested" I stick with Mandrake, his other suggestion was stick with RPMS /URPMI package managers and learn them. Though Magiea is my primary, I still run mostly rpm based distros. I sometimes think Bruno wanted to create a core of "specialist:" for distro types(ok in my case...it was specifically one type ) Anyway.. I wish I had his patience too.... never seemed to get that part developed very well.
ReleaseRoderick
Memory is a bit wobbly.........age..lifestyle etc, darling. But l reckon I was reading in here shortly before I was Linux-smitten. This Bruno dude was a Patient and Understanding Open-Source bitten Linux-smitten guy who must have had some Guru-istic talent. Re my current graphics anomaly....the work-around is to swop out the h/drive to another machine....but no, O dear me, say ye not. I know how to undo h/drive screws already, swop out learns me nowt, even though I have an all-singing and bells and whistle-dancing UEFI hot rod waiting on the shelf. I shall embrace both the Knappen and Kodicek ethic that no child is ineducable. Lets have another bash at it....apt-got-apt-going..get-gone
