DNS issue?

I wonder if people here can reach www.porteus.org? Site has been down for about a week, for me here on the west coast of the US -- but a few other users of the old Slax board say they can reach it. Maybe only people in Europe?

One of the mods reported that they had 'changed DNS settings' -- but as I understand the web that means the problem is not fixable by a client?

I'm running OpenDNS and get this error:

The connection was interrupted

The connection to porteus.org was interrupted while the page was loading.

The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few

moments.

If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network

connection.

If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure

that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

You can bypass DNS by using the direct IP --> http://67.18.207.212/

Under Construction

The site you are trying to view does not currently have a default page. It may be in the process of being upgraded and configured.

Please try this site again later. If you still experience the problem, try contacting the Web site administrator.

If you are the Web site administrator and feel you have received this message in error, please see "Enabling and Disabling Dynamic Content" in IIS Help.

To access IIS Help

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.

  2. In the Open text box, type inetmgr. IIS Manager appears.

  3. From the Help menu, click Help Topics.

  4. Click Internet Information Services.

It's not a DNS issue, I don't think. I can't even access it using a Dresden, Germany TOR access point. :(

Hello,

It seems some users are using out-dated DNS zone. This is why they can't access to porteus.org. If you are still getting this issue, just report it to us at info[at]porteus.org.

Thanks.

Well I use a Level3 dns (209.244.0.3 and 209.244.0.4) so how would I go about reporting this to your link above? Should I just email them with my dns info and explain that I cannot reach the site?

They appears up to date here. Maybe a local cache in your gateway or your operating system?

I can still access porteus.org easily as long as my https everywhere extension is disabled. I'm using OpenDNS, by the way.

Welcome hamza! :)

Downloaded, burned to CD, not getting ready to boot into CD so that I can install on thumb drive. Will stop in at the Porteus forums later.

Thanks! :)

That is very weird. I have had no problem right from the beginning here in Virginia using Google, OpenDNS as DNS servers.

$ nslookup www.porteus.org
Server: 8.8.8.8
Address: 8.8.8.8#53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: www.porteus.org
Address: 67.18.207.212

It checked both Google's DNS and OpenDNS but it reports that Google DNS got it.

No worky here ...

64 bin # nslookup www.porteus.org

Server: 192.168.1.1

Address: 192.168.1.1#53

** server can't find www.porteus.org: SERVFAIL

Pepper-amd64 bin #

And if I try to go directly to that URL 67.18.207.212 then Firefox reports "site under construction".

You're not running the https everywhere extension, are you? That was the cause of not being able to reach the site for me. Once I disabled https everywhere for www.porteus.org, it worked fine.

ah, OK. Looks like you are using your own router as DNS server (192.168.1.1).

You need to put other DNS if your router is not getting DNS properly from your ISP which it apparently is not.

I would suggest changing your DNS server on your computer from your router (192.168.1.1) to Google's 8.8.8.8 in your network settings for your network connection.

If it is Windows, you might want to reboot if it still doesn't work after you replace 192.168.1.1 with 8.8.8.8 in your DNS servers. or Disable, then Re-enable the network connection.
