Sort Order Of Icons

Recommended Posts

My OS is Windows XP Home edition. My browser is the most recent version of IE. When I view my folders and files in explorer (not IE) but in explorer, all the folders are sorted alphabetically; that is in ascending order. Likewise if I view my folders in Microsoft Excel, they are listed in ascending order. That's the way I want it. Here's my problem: In just about everything else, when I view my folders and files, they are in descending order; in other words they are listed from Z to A. Yes, I can right click and choose to put them in ascending order, but when I click on one of the sub-folders it goes right back to descending order--from Z to A. Is there any way I can fix that? Thanks.Frank

In just about everything else
Exactly what is "everything else"? Other programs? Just going into "My Computer"? Please elaborate a little more please?

A little tip...In most "explorer" type windows, if you select the "Details" view under the "View" menu, you can change the sort order by clicking on the "headers" over the file information, i.e. clicking "Name" will sort "Z" to "A" - click again for "A" to "Z", clicking "Size" will sort by file size, etc...As in the other post, applying the change to all folders will keep your choices.

Here's what 's strange: When I'm in an Explorer type window, everything is sorted the way I want--A to Z. I'll give you a few examples of where they are sorted Z to A. If I open Microsoft Works, a dialog box pops up that shows several folders one of which is a folder called MSWorks Documents. Everything in that box is Z to A. If I'm in Outlook Express and I want to add an attachment, it brings up a box where I can browse for the file that I want. So, I'll right click and choose "Arrange icons by name." If I click on one of those folders to get to a sub-folder, they again will be Z to A. Another place is when I use my CD burner. When I click on "Add files and folders", they are Z to A. If I want to download a file and the box comes up asking me if I want to Save the file or Open it, when I choose Save, all my folders are listed Z to A. I tried going to Tools/Folder options/View and clicked on "Apply to all". Still doesn't change anything. I'm probably not making my self clear, it's a little hard to explain. If you can understand what I'm talking about and can help, I would appreciate it. If not, then it's because I am probably not doing a good job of explaining just what it's doing. But, I thank you all anyway. I wish you all a pleasant and peaceful day.Frank

Go to Folder Options. Click the View tab. Go down until you see an option called "Remember each folders view settings" and make sure it is checked. You may have to right click still to get them to list from A to Z, but they should stay that way after you do it once.Let me know how that turns out.

I fixed it! It was more luck than sense--but it's fixed. I went where you said, Stryder, to see if there was a check mark in "Remember each folder's view settings." There was already a check mark there. I guess I always had it checked. However, when I was there, I looked up in the upper right hand corner and there was a button marked, "Reset All Folders". I thought to my self, "I wonder if I ought to click that button? What have I got to lose, I've clicked just about every other button on this computer trying to get it fixed." So I went ahead and clicked it. Lo and behold--that took care of it. Everything is now the way I want it. Sometime ago I must have made a change some place that messed it up. I'll be darn if I can think of what it could have been, but it's fixed now. Since I'm that lucky, maybe I should go out and buy a lottery ticket tonight. :) Thanks for getting me in the right area.Peace and harmony to you all.Frank

Good deal Frank, glad to hear it. As a last resort I was going to mention the Reset All Folders, but I do not like to do that because I do not know what customizations people have made to their folders and that would wipe them all out.
