mhbell
First off I needed to revise this for some of the mistakes so that people will not get the wrong Idea. the Live versions would not install to my VBox from a ISO or from a DVD or USB key.The 2 live versions of Cinnamon and LXde that I tried would boot up and and run fine as a Live distro, but would not install to the Vbox Drive or to the hard drive. Both kept looking for the DVD Drive even though booting from the ISO in Vbox or the Hard drive. They would start to install but could not read from the USB Key or the DVD even though I booted from the USB Key or the DVD. I downloaded the full version 3.6 GB and installed it to the hard disk. No problem. I downloaded it the day it was released and have been using it as my main OS. This is probably the best Version of Debian yet, at least for me. I took my Chrome, Thunderbird, Firefox, Variety, Pysol and most of my Home Directory Folders and copied over to the Debian installation. Everything is working without a hitch so far. I even managed to install F.Lux and Xflux (Night Light) Makes it easy on the eyes during the day and night time. I installed Red Shift, but it would not work. I miss some of the things I had in Mint such as Mints software manager and auto updates. I will attempt to install a Cron job for Stretch to do the same using APT. So far I am pleased with this version of Debian. Much better than previous versions. Another thing that was nice installing the full version, you can choose what Desktops you want to use. I choose cinnamon and lxde. I can choose the one I want at boot. Both work fine for me. securitybreach
Why were you trying to install it in a vm using a usb key or dvd? You already have the iso downloaded so why not just use that instead of taking the time to burn a dvd or usb?
raymac46
I would think that Debian Stretch would be a good VirtualBox candidate now that it is stable. I am running Debian unstable on my Thinkpad and it seems to work just fine. Edited June 21, 2017 by raymac46
securitybreach
Also I would check out redshift instead of F.Lux: http://jonls.dk/redshift/. It is available in the Debian repos, cli version and the gtk version. This should help you configure it if you go with the cli version. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/redshift I would think that Debian Stretch would be a good VirtualBox candidate now that it is stable. I am running Debian unstable on my Thinkpad and it seems to work just fine. I have it running in virt-manager and it works flawlessly so I would think that it would be fine in VBox.

You already have the iso downloaded so why not just use that instead of taking the time to burn a dvd or usb? Forgot to mention that I first tried to install it using the ISO, but it would not install to the VM I then tried to install to the hard drive using a usb key and a dvd. still would not install. These were the Live versions. The Live versions would boot up and work as live but would not install to the VM or to a hard drive. This was the live versions only. The non live full version installed without a problemMel

Night shift or night light is what is used in Fedora. To many Distro's I guess and a senior moment. F'Lux and Xflux works great for me. raymac46
I think saturnian mentioned something about the Live versions being problematic earlier: http://forums.scotsnewsletter.com/index.php?showtopic=94879entry451401

raymac46
The big advantage I see to using any stable version in VBox is that the kernel version doesn't change and stuff your Guest Additions. In my brief experience with rolling release distros I have found them to be far more stable when actually installed on the rails. Both Debian Sid and Arch have worked great that way.
securitybreach
It's kind of a shame that virtualbox still needs a script (guest additions) to figure out the host's hardware.

raymac46
My main interest in virtualization is to be able to run Linux on Windows so I am pretty much restricted to VBox or VMWare Player. I tried them both and I like VBox better. Seems to have a few more features and the licence restrictions aren't as severe as they are with VMWare Player. Both require additional software - either VMWare Tools or VBox Guest Additions - to maximize your virtual experience. Probably if I were a commercial user I'd invest the money and time into VMWare Pro.

raymac46
Try the netinstall on this page. It is a minimal image of only about 290 MB. You will need to connect with Ethernet unless you are very lucky and your wifi doesn't need non-free firmware.

You will need to connect with Ethernet unless you are very lucky and your wifi doesn't need non-free firmware. I have a Hi speed connection and can download the Live versions in less than 7 minutes so it is no big deal to download a full or live version without having to mess with a net install. When I was on dial up or a slow connection I used the net install.

raymac46
I still prefer netinstall to downloading a big ISO. YMMV.
sunrat
Some comments about not being able to install from the live sessions in these threads: http://forums.debian...p?f=17&t=133474 http://forums.debian...p?f=10&t=133483 FDN is full of reports of this problem, may be a bug. netinstall seems to be the most reliable. Redshift works great here too. IIRC I had to install another package for geolocation to work. Otherwise you can put in your co-ordinates manually. saturnian
Check this out: 9.0.1 live/install images, put up on June 20th: https://cdimage.debi...d64/iso-hybrid/ I guess that takes care of the problem of not being able to install from the live image boot menu.

securitybreach
Debian in Virtual Box? BLASPHEMY! Why not? It works beautifully. No. It works virtually. Actually with qemu, it works with the actual hardware not virtual hardware devices like virtualbox does.
