A History of Android OS Cupcake to Android M

Android is an interesting operating system and over the years has gone through some massive changes and evolutions to become the system that we are all familiar with now. Today we bring you the history of Android OS infographic designed with the help of The Smart Phone Company . That said, have you ever wondered about the history of Android OS, each release and how Android has evolved through the generations? Well, chances are that most people associate Cupcake as the first generation of Android, but those who remember, will know there were a couple of generations before. In fact, as you might expect, it all started with Android 1.0 which came pre-loaded on what was the first commercially available android device, the HTC Dream or T-Mobile G1 depending on where you were.

Following on from Android 1.0, the next generations of the operating system came hot and heavy with evolutions rolling out in quick succession. In fact, 2009 in particular, saw many of the early iterations of android all rolling out and seemed to mark the year in which android started to come to fruition. That year included some of the early famed versions including Cupcake, Donut and Eclair. In fact, it was not until roughly 2012 when Google started adjusting to a more annual release cycle and this largely began with Android 4.1 through to 4.3, more affectionately known as Jelly Bean.

Of course, all android users are probably familiar with the latest version of Android, Android 5.x (Lollipop) which is well into its current cycle now. Not to mention, that in spite of a number of devices still waiting on their Lollipop update to arrive, the Android community is already hotly anticipating the next update, Android M, which landed recently in a developer preview version. Either way and whether you are currently running Android KitKat, Lollipop or the M Preview, take a stroll down memory lane and check below as we go through each Android OS and give you the break down all the way to Android M.
