raymac46
Security software is a necessary evil in the Windows universe so it doesn't get much praise, but after a month or so with ESET on a couple of machines I have to say it's a great product. ESET tends to be a bit more communicative than Bitdefender, which was definitely a "fire and forget" type of suite. However I don't mind since it works well. It's done a good job of keeping me clear of phishing scams in emails and if I happen on a hacked site, it's quick to warn me. But it's what it doesn't do that I like best. It has not interfered with driver updates or (probably) my wifi connection (Bitdefender) nor has it let me get a Ransomware worm or bork my Internet access completely with a bad upgrade (McAfee.) So I'd like to give it a thumbs up and thank those here at SNF who recommended it to me. If you want to go with a paid security suite that does its job and doesn't get in the way ESET is the one of choice.

raymac46
The last time I was in my favorite computer parts store, they were selling boxed copies of ESET. Another informed recommendation for it.
ebrke
ESET has worked well on my mother's windows laptop for 7+ years now. I renew it faithfully.

securitybreach
Works well on my Android tablet. Yeah, I use it on my phones and tablets. No need on the computers as they all run Linux...
Guest LilBambi
I use ESET Smart Security on my Windows computers, ESET Cyber Security Pro on my Macs and I am also using it on my Amazon Fire tablet. I have loved ESET's products since I used to use just NOD32, but, I love being able to enable PUPs checking. It is not set by default, but gives me the ability to enable it. I love that ability. I love that ESET has this available if I want it. ESET is my personal favorite! Always has been.

I didn't know about that (unless it's something I saw and forgot about after I set it up on mom's laptop a couple of years ago ).
rolanaj
So is this ability to do PUPs checking the main reason to go with Smart security instead of NOD? I just bought a new PC and it came with Windows 10 and McAfee which I have had issues with before. I won a subscription to ESET a couple years ago and was really impressed with it so plan on replacing McAfee on the new PC with it.
raymac46
I just bought a new PC and it came with Windows 10 and McAfee McAfee was responsible for me getting one of those "FBI Ransomware" rootkits and an update once completely borked my system. The less said the better.

I got SmartSecurity for my mother's new laptop a couple of years ago because it just seemed like a pretty comprehensive security package. I had used NOD in previous years on her machines however. Between SS and MalwareBytes, she's been okay so far *knock wood*.
rolanaj
Well I think I will buy the SmartSecurity for the PC and my laptop. I see they have a multidevice one too but they list PC and Mac, I have two tablets and a smart phone that are all android devices. Is it as hard to remove McAfee as it used to be or am I thinking of another antivirus software?
ebrke
Sorry, don't know. Never used McAfee. There are a lot of links to how-to's, here's one from MajorGeeks: http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/mcafee_consumer_product_removal_tool.html
raymac46
Not too bad. I think you just have to uninstall using the stock Windows tool. There is a removal tool specific to Mcafee but I didn't have to use it.
rolanaj
Well Eset had lots of information on how to remove antivirus software including their own and links to sites and removal tools for all the different ones. It was pretty painless really. There is a special browser just for doing your banking which I thought was kind of cool. Once again impressed with this software. goretsky
Hello, Checking for PUAs (potentially unwanted applications, ESET's term for PUPs) is part of ESET NOD32 Antivirus as well. ESET Smart Security is more geared towards having additional network protection stuff (firewall, anti-spam, etc.).
