Let's say I have an NT 4.0 PDC that 8 PC's connect to. Those PC's are a mix of Windows NT 4.0 Workstation and Windows 2000 Pro. I want to buy a new server and use Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition. After the initial install, before the 2003 server has had any roles assigned to it, can it join an NT 4.0 domain or are they incompatible?

For more concise answers and help on this complicated subject, I suggest that you go to one of the experts site on w2003 server and nt4.Mark Minasi's home page (he is a expert author and lecturer on windows servers..http://x220.win2ktest.com/forum/minasi.com is a great place to get help..

2003 can be configured to be anything you like within the NT4 domain. I would suggest you set it up and begin considering migration from NT4 to 2003.

I don't think there is really going to be a migration in this case. The domain is tiny, only 8 client PC's and one server. My idea was to bring up the 2003 server with the NT server still in place as PDC. Copy the data files and such from the NT server to the 2003 server, than shut down the NT server and assign roles to the 2003 server (after checking user accounts and such on the PDC). I figure it's easy for me to create 8 new user accounts on the 2003 server and set it up like the NT server was setup. I'm not sure migration is an issue in this case. Let me know if you still think it is.

Why not use the migration tool instead of doing it manually? That is the whole point for the tool. Domain functionality is WAY beyond that of NT4.
