Equipment:Dell Dimension 4300, Windows XP HomeHP Officejet 720 Printer/Fax/Scanner (Parallel port)HP Photosmart P1000 Printer (USB port)Scenario:Both the HP Officejet 720 (parallel port) and the HP Photosmart P1000 (USB port) were used with a previous computer (Compaq) operating on Windows 98SE.Problem:Cannot get HP Photosmart P1000 installed. Using the XP-version of the driver installs the files, but the printer is never “found†after the USB port is connected. HP Officejet 720 appears to operate properly with XP-version of the HP All-In-One Driver. So Far:1. Uninstalled (and manually removed) all Photosmart software.2. Uninstalled all Officejet software, drivers, etc.3. Cleaned registry.4. Installed Windows XP Service Park 1.5. Parallel port configured per HP instructions for Officejet 720 XP installation.6. Tried installing the Photosmart P1000 with the Officejet uninstalled. The installation failed at the same point, immediately after plugging in the USB cable.7. Installed a duplicate, known “goodâ€, Photosmart P1000. Installation failed at the same point, immediately after plugging in the USB cable.8. As there is no other USB device attached to this computer (incl. keyboard, etc.). I manually removed the USB Controllers and Root Hubs in Device Manager. When the system was restarted, an unknown USB device kept trying to be installed. More to the point, with the HP Officejet completely uninstalled, upon boot-up, a USB device is still found, identified as the “Officejet Printerâ€. It can’t locate the proper drivers and gets “installed†as an Unknown Device under the USB Controllers section of Device Manager. I have tried to point the driver search to c:\windows\inf and to the Officejet drivers, all without success.I have disabled the Unknown Device, I have uninstalled it, I have ignored it – all without success. It always comes back and installs itself as an Unknown Device under the USB Controllers section of Device Manager. I sense this Unknown Device may be causing the inability of the system to recognize the Photosmart printer, but am unsure what to do about it.I’m about out of tricks, now. Short of a complete XP Home reinstall or repair, I wanted to ask if there was something I could try. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

You need to use HP's usb uninstaller. Go to their site and look for the usb uninstalled for your printer, after you run it, reboot, windows will find your printer. I have used their usb uninstaller on several of their printers at work.M

I thought the HP USB Hub uninstaller might be what I was missing - but it didn't work. The only HP USB hub uninstallers I found were for Deskjet printers - nothing for Photosmart Printers. Thanks any way.Still stuck.
