joesixpak Posted April 28, 2003 Share Posted April 28, 2003 I'm interested in trying Linux and after reading reviews of several distributions I saw a couple of beginner distro's that interest me. I ordered Phat Linux and Lycoris Linux. I received the Phat Linux CD today and armed with some basic instructions that are supposed get it started I installed it. It's installed ok as far as I know and according to the instructions I have, at the login prompt I'm supposed to type "root" and give the password "phat" and then I'm supposed to see the Phat Linux menu. Well I logged in as instructed and all I have is a line that says "[root@PhatBox root]#" I have no clue what to do with this. If anyone can help I sure would appreciate it. Being root all the time is no good practice.Once you have made the new user and given him a password, log in as that user ! ( logging out as root is < exit > )Then do < startx > and your GUI will start up with all it's colors and shapes, there you'll feel more comfortable ! joesixpak Posted April 28, 2003 Author Share Posted April 28, 2003 Ok, according to what I'm reading here I first have to get in with the root password "phat" to get into the OS. I'm then supposed to see the Phat menu and select 11 for exit menu and then type "startx". joesixpak Posted April 28, 2003 Author Share Posted April 28, 2003 Yes that's right. The command line works and I typed in top and for all the processes it says the user is root. Bruno Posted April 28, 2003 Share Posted April 28, 2003 Looks like X is not installed then.1) You siad you gave the top command and it listed all the processes, have a look if X is listed.2) If you can do top it means you are logged in ( as root, but never mind that for the moment )3) Phat installes from within windows as I understand, did everything during install go right ? Did you not forget to install X ?4) Try a re-install and look out for the X package.I'll have a look on their website see if I can find anything.UPDATE: no info at all on their webpage ! First of all, Phat does install in Windows, it installs a Phat directory on my C drive. I reinstalled it but I can't tell anything about X cuz you just wait for several minutes and it doesn't show you any info about what it's doing. It really got ugly after the reinstal though. Only if you've got very old hardware this ( mdkenterprice = Mandrake ) kernel will recognise your hardware. My guess is that this kernel is from 5 years ago or even older ! Not worried about the money though it only cost me 2.99 USD for phat, now I know why. On the Phat website they're charging, if I remember right, around 29 dollars. I really want to get at least one version of Linux running. Just for your info updatedb gave me command not found. Thanks very much for your patience any way. It will install fine, but that's it, unless I'm reading something wrong. On the Phat homepage it says it will install from XP, but on the d/l page it says it will not run. As long as Phat Linux is on a FAT32 or NTFS partition, the Phat Linux boot CD will find it.I do have a second hard drive, empty and freshly formatted in FAT32, I don't know if it would make a difference if I installed it there or not. I read that too, and on the d/l page it said that it wouldn't run in XP; tried it anyway, installed fine but would not run. Did some checking - opened the autoexec.bat file, from the Phat folder, in Notepad and it had a line that said: error, will only run in DOS (or MS-DOS), anyway tried that 3x - got the same error message each time. On the other hand, you will probably like Lycoris Linux, as it is very easy to install on a multi-boot platform, and is very Windows-like in appearance. Enjoy...
