The long-awaited Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Version 2.0 has been released!

MBAM_Ver2.JPG

Changes to MBAM Version 2.0

Highlights of the changes to MBAM Version 2.0 include the following:

  • Redesigned Interface
  • Improved Anti-Rootkit and Chameleon Self-protection Technologies
  • Rewritten Malicious Website Blocking
  • Improved 64-bit Support
  • Detection and Removal Engine Improved
  • Renamed Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Pro to Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium

Subscription Licensing Model

The free version of MBAM continues to be available. However, with the launch of Version 2.0, comes a move to a subscription licensing model, $24.95 per year for three (3) computers.

This change is due to the high popularity of MBAM resulting in the need to cover costs in bandwidth, hosting fees, infrastructure, salaries of researchers, QA department and more, which have grown immensely.

Existing Lifetime Licenses Honored

It is important for those who already have a lifetime license purchased for version 1.x to know that those licenses will continue to have a lifetime license for 2.0.

It has also been announced that a few thousand more lifetime licenses will be available soon as a special offer. See Marcin's announcement at Malwarebytes Unpacked, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 2.0!.

Awesome! Looks like some great changes in MBAM 2.0! Look forward to using it now that it's been released!

MBAM is on every Windows computer I have and I am always recommending it to everyone I meet! Wonderful piece of software.

Do we know if they are seeing any issues for the new 2.0 version as yet ... just in case, since software changes can get dicey at times for the fringes like the one below:

Such as one I noticed that I hope they can take care of quickly for those who are sight impaired/blind, and that is that MBAM 2.0 was having trouble with JAWS (from the comments on this link). That is one thing that would be very important for them!

Great news that it will still works on Windows XP SP 2 or later, too!

Software Requirements:

Windows Vista/Windows7/Windows 8 (32 bit or 64 bit)

Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Later

Internet Explorer 6 or newer

Hardware Requirements:

256MB of RAM (512MB or more recommended)

800MHz CPU or faster

20MB of free hard disk space

800x600 or greater screen resolution

Active internet connection for database and product updates

Some of the best software out there to get rid of malware! Awesome work!

The scan types have had a name change:

  • Flash Scan is now called Hyper Scan
  • Quick Scan is now called Threat Scan
  • Full scan is now called Custom Scan

Generally, all that is needed is a Threat Scan.

Following is the definition of the renamed scans, which I should have included previously:

Quick Scan --> Threat Scan

Threat Scan is the primary scan to choose because in almost all cases it catches all malware that a "Full Scan" would in less time. It scans for threats in all of the locations that malware likes to hide on your system, and ignoring places that it doesn't.

Flash Scan --> Hyper Scan

This was renamed because with the word "flash", it can be implied that this scan will search flash memory devices such as flash drives/thumbsticks, which it does not. This type of scan primarily searches for malicious processes that are currently running in memory. Because it takes less time to perform than a Threat Scan, it was renamed "Hyper Scan" to avoid the confusion with "flash".

Full Scan --> Custom Scan

A custom scan can be used to perform a full scan, that is, scanning every file and folder on every drive connected to the system. However, that's not its only function. A few specific directories can be selected as well instead of simply scanning everything.

I'm still running 1.75 on one XP computer because the CPU jumped to 100% when I installed v2. The 6 other computers don't mind v2.

I might try the latest version on this computer and see if it has settled down.

This could explain why you've had problems with v2 on Windows XP, from the discussion at Malwarebytes commits to lifetime support for XP users:

Right now some of our products' date=' like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 2.0 and even Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.75 do have some limitations when run on Windows XP due to certain APIs that exist on newer Windows versions not existing in XP, but the majority of features and functions do work and are available on Windows XP.

We will try to overcome these limitations where we can when possible via alternate implementations, but I expect that as time goes on and as malware becomes more sophisticated and the methods to detect, remove and protect against it likewise increase in complexity, more such limitations may come about, but we'll do all that we can to provide the best protection possible on XP and other legacy platforms (like Vista, for example, which also has limitations compared to Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1).

Of course, limitations are one thing, but totally not supporting an operating system is quite another and as it is, there's no reason for us not to support XP so we are still and plan to continue to do so for the foreseeable future. [/quote']

My husband's Dell desktop, probably 2004 vintage, runs XP and has 1.25GB RAM and both versions of 2 move the CPU up to 100%. I uninstalled and put back 1.75 twice.

I made the final image yesterday and it will stay at that version. In a few days, I'll move it and it will no longer be connected to the internet so I might completely remove MBAM.
