I've been playing around with Chromium on Slackware for the past couple days. I don't know what to think about it just yet. It's fast, so it seems. I'm just so addicted to Firefox that it's aggravating to try another browser. It's like driving an unfamiliar car. I can do it, but it's not comfortable at all.

Chrome/Chromium has tons of extensions, but they aren't quite the same as the ones I use in Firefox. For example, Speed Dial, which I depend on so much in FF is very, very different in Chrome. I can't find an RSS reader that works from bookmarks like my Brief does in FF. I did find Adblock+, DoNotTrackMe, and an addon similar to NoScript called ScriptSafe. I also found a Flash blocker for Chrome, but it's weird compared to FlashBlock in FF.

It's strange. It's like the browser from another dimension. It looks like a browser. It works like a browser. There's just something other-worldly about it. I know. It's a Bizarro World browser. :) I do like its speed and small resource/CPU foot print. I don't like its font rendering capabilities. Fonts in Chrome SUCK! Can't speak any more clearly about that.

Well, I'm just getting more and more disgusted with Firefox and its Flash related crashes, high CPU usage, random lockups, high RAM usage, etc. Tired. Just really tired of it. It's taking my joy out of the Internet lately. :( Pale Moon did not resolve the issue as I thought. It's using the same profile as FF. Evidently, there's something wrong there. Yes, I've tried with a fresh profile. In less than a week, the new profile started behaving just like the old one.

I seem to be the only one in the world having these Firefox issues.

I guess I'll play around with Bizarro Chrome some more over the next few days. Oh, and why does this dang browser keep demanding that I login to my Google account all the time? It even offered to set me up a Google account if I didn't have one. I feel as though they're attempting to assimilate me. They want me to join the Collective. Hi, I'm 13 of 57. Glad to meet you. borg.gif

Well, Chromium isn't exactly Google Chrome.

But you also want to go into the settings and check to show Home, and to show bookmarks toolbar...that will make it look more normal.

Oh, and add flash since it's it added in Chromium like it is in Google Chrome right?

Thought you gave up on Google stuff? ;)

Yup. I have the Home button added. I don't show the Bookmarks toolbar because it shows on the Speed Dial page. I'm using PepperFlash in Chromium. For all intents and purposes, Chromium is as close to Chrome as I need to get. When downloading from Google Chrome's site, they actually linked me to Alien Bob's (Eric Hameleers) private repos for a Slackware compatible Chromium package. I thought about compiling a Google Chrome for Slackware, but it has too many dependencies. I wasn't in the dependency hunting mood at the time. Don't want to end up in ...

Syncing (encrypted or unencrypted) across browsers is not available without logging into an account.

Paid accounts also not available without an account login.

They do ask a lot...

So what makes it look alien to you? Looks like any other browser to me. row of icons with an address bar, bookmarks toolbar (if you want it), home button, forward/back buttons, extensions, a place to get to various settings, print, extensions, etc.

Chrome definitely *feels* different than firefox.

The main reason I stay with Chrome is that each tab is its own process. If one gets out of hand (happens at times), you don't have to kill the whole browser, just one tab. ;)

Yup. Just feels not-like-FF. ;)

I removed Speed Dial, as it doesn't work well in Chromium. Also, don't like the fact that there is no decent RSS Reader available for Chrome/Chromium. Don't like that you can only use one theme and not store any. Don't like the new tab page. Don't like... well, I don't like a lot of things about Chromium/Chrome. I think the don't likes out weigh the likes, unfortunately.

I guess I'm stuck with FF. Maybe one day Mozilla will fix the hoggish behaviors and HTML5 (or something better) will, for once and always, replace Flash. Until then, I will suffer in silence. Yeah... SURE I WILL! AAAHAHAHAHA :hysterical:

After all my frustration with Firefox, Chrome was a breath of fresh air for me. Sure, the syncing feature is nice, but I don't use it that much. It is really the ability to kill an errant tab. I hate it killing the entire browser, as in Firefox.

Doing a FF Reset seemed to solve my issues. That said, I had to reinstall all extensions/add-ons and redo changes in Preferences, Kind of a pain.

Well, I at least solved the little problem with their carpy Speed Dial extension. I made my own locally served little custom_dial... custom_dial

Font rendering still sucks, though. Chrome doesn't do 1/2 of the things my FF does. However, it is fast. I guess it's the Walmart of browsers. I'll continue to tinker and see what I can improve here and there. I will NOT be logging in to Google to sync my accounts. I'll save my Chromium profiles to DropBox and update the Chromium on my other systems that way, if I even bother to install Chromium on any of my other systems.

I've found that if I use Liberation Sans in Slackware and set it to 18 pix minimum, it's not too bad looking.

Just for interest.

Yeah, I've used a webkit based browser before (Midori). They're fast and stable, but lack the features of FF or even Chromium.

Been there, done that. I started with a brand spankin' new profile. FF had it trashed in less than a week; back to high cpu and RAM usage, especially when using Flash intensive sites like Grooveshark or Photobucket. :(

I'm sorta' getting the hang of Chromium. It's nice to listen to Grooveshark in a pinned tab and still surf and do other things without using 50% cpu and 1Gig RAM. ;)

I can't find a decent rocker gesture extension. Nor can I find a good locking tab extension that will work with a locally served page. And sadly, there is no RSS reader compatible with all my pre-existing feeds stored in FF. Myeh, no biggie. I can always open FF when I want to read my feeds. I actually added a multi-launcher to my panel just a few minutes ago that contains all my browser buttons with Chromium as default now.

I'm using Xmarks and Lastpass. I'm NOT signing into to sync with Google. :angry2:

And no reason you have to. It's not required. It's only if you want to Sync across your OSes using Google Sync, and/or use certain free and all paid apps form the Chrome store.

I set it up on ericslaptop01 a few minutes ago. I just carried everything from the main system to that one on a thumb drive. I'll do the same tomorrow with the shop system. Maybe I can finally break the Firefox addiction. My RAM and CPU will love me. ;)

You're becoming assimilated like Josh. What will your collective number be? ;)

Back on topic...

I set up the shop system w/ default Chromium now.

I also added https everywhere to my extensions collection.
