Dell Laptop Chargers

I posted somewhere around here about recently obtaining a little Dell D420 netbook. I installed Slack in it and have it on the counter in my kitchen.

When I received the little lappy, I was told that the battery was bad. I confirmed that. When I turned the machine on while plugged into the AC adapter, it would boot/run normally, but the usually green battery light was a blinking yellow.

$ cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state
present:                     yes

capacity state:           OK

charging state:          charging

present rate:             1 mA

remaining capacity:  1410 mAh

present voltage:        10411 mV
Now, the above was with the adapter that I received with the laptop.

I plugged in the adapter that I normally use with my ericslaptop01 on my office desk. The laptop battery immediately came on green solid and the graphical indicator (xfce4-power-manager) says that the battery is at 32% and charging with full charge in 1hr, 20 minutes. Here's the command line output for this adapter:

$ cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state
present:                     yes

capacity state:           OK

charging state:          charging

present rate:             2485 mA

remaining capacity:  1945 mAh

present voltage:        11225 mV
It's obvious from the difference in the current draw on the original adapter (1 ma) compared to the second adapter (2485 mA) that there is some sort of AC adapter issue? Right? Odd, though... I checked the output of the original adapter. It was 19.95 vdc, which is correct. Even though it will run the little netbook on AC just fine, it doesn't seem to be supplying enough current to charge the battery. Hmm... odd.

I think I'm going to try that original adapter on another laptop (my Inspiron 1521) and see what happens. Stand by...

Nope. Current draw on charge still 1 mA. I guess that adapter is caputski. I can use it to power the laptop, but it doesn't have enough juice to charge the battery. It might have enough to maintain the battery when the unit is off, though. We'll see...

Later...

You know, I HATE the updates to the board software a few months back that caused all these tag display bugs in the UBBcode. It just SUCKS! :angry: I'm not even going to edit to fix the above. I don't care anymore.

A/C bricks have gotten so cheap on eBay that I'd buy one just on spec.

Yup. Found one just a few minutes ago. Brand new Dell OEM 65 Watt just like the original for $11.95 w/ free shipping. Should be here before the end of the week. :)
