greets, o windows 7 investigators:

i have a 1 yr old dell optiplex that came w/ win 7 pro.

it was reloaded with xp, then last week, the partition dropped, and win 7 pro was put back on.

it worked fine for 7 or 8 days, including today, but when you attempt login, you get exactly 5 characters of a user name and win 7 freezes the keyboard.
the mouse continues to move the pointer on screen.
the mouse =cannot= however effect any button after the keyboard quits responding.
the win 7 text to speech continues to speak.
i swapped out the keyboard, but that did not help.
it's been restarted several times.  5 keystrokes and that's it.  even in safe mode.

anyone heard of this?

Is this 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 7 Pro?

Actually ENV. Im using a new laptop i purchased from MSI. you are correct in saying the keyboard has a mind of its own. it randomly presses buttons such as... f11.... tab... enter.. or random numbers that are nowhere near your fingers. it has nothing to do with your personal machine. it is a bug within windows7. regardless of what anyone else tells you. i dare you to try any other OS except vista. "they use same ____" and you will not have the problem anymore. during the time i was typing this out. it tabbed me 4 times pressed enter 2 times and f11 once. Microsoft will tell you its hardware because they don't want to spend the time to fix it. i'll keep you posted because i am simply making a rewritten version of windows7. and will be submitting it to Microsoft. with the obvious corrections. or maybe just be they're competition.  reguardless microsoft is lazy and wont fix the problem. because they havent typed enough on a OS to test such a problem. hence..one paragraph.

Well definitely a weird problem. Never heard of it before 5 minutes ago. If I was a member of the forum over there I would suggest plugging in a an old 9 pin style keyboard and see if the problems persist. (i'd also tell the guy complaining about the UAC when an administrator that win7 is doing what an OS should do when an admin is about to do something which might turn out to be stupid)

As for the OP - if you don't have a 9pin keyboard  if you type 4 characters , get a cup of coffee come back and type another 4 characters , wash out the cup and then finish typing in the rest of the password , what happens?

acronis image from before xp was installed - so pretty much back to factory setup (dell)

Actually in Windows 7, there is an accessibility button before you login on the Welcome screen; bottom lower left; light blue button; not the red one for shutting down. Maybe check that?

At first, I was going to suggest trying a different keyboard & mouse.  But after thinking about this, my hunch is that it's software related (as opposed to hardware).  It's still possible however that you have a bad memory stick or something installed in the PC (component) that is causing this problem.  So maybe running a thorough Memtest86 would be in order.  It sounds like Windows 7 does indeed boot up albeit not quite fully to the desktop.  It would be nice if you could boot into safe mode to disable some items in MSCONFIG to see if that alleviates the problem any - but I see in your OP that the problem also happens in safe mode.  Since you already have a clean image of the system before the problem began, I would just reimage the system and be done with it if I were you.  If this were a common occurrence, I could see you spending more time to pinpoint/troubleshoot the procblem, but seeing as though this is a 1 off occurrence - I would spend the least amount of time on this as possible and enjoy the holidays!

Have you tried wiping the machine and actually reinstalling it from Dell's recovery media, as opposed to reloading the disk image made with Acronis True Image?  If so, did that behave any differently?

yes, perhaps trying to chase down the issue is a waste of time.

and because the reload from xp to 7 (as it shipped) may have induced the problem,
i'll probably grab a dell win 7 disk and wipe the disk and install from scratch

will keep everyone posted...

it quit.
no, i mean it works.
it quit locking up on the 5th keystroke.
i did not reload win 7 or do anything else to fix.
weird.
maybe the motherboard is troubled.

Haunted hardware....groan... Does sound like an intermittent hardware issue for sure now. Wonder what made the difference? Change in ambient heat which made it cool down? Change in flexing of the motherboard by checking the seating of cards? Bad or intermittent soldier joint?

It wouldn't  hurt to run the System File Checker Tool.  Standard instructions:

To determine whether the issue that you are experiencing is caused by one or more system files that are used by Windows, run the System File Checker tool. The System File Checker tool scans system files and replaces incorrect versions of the system files by using the correct versions.

To run the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:

• Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
• Right-click cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.
• If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue
• At the command prompt, type the following line, and then press ENTER:
  sfc /scannow (note the space before the forward slash)
• When the scan is complete, test to see whether the issue that you are experiencing is resolved.
