raymac46
Looks like Ubuntu will replace LightDM in their flagship 17,10 GNOME release. Pity. They won't support LightDM much either except for bug fixes. I find LightDM's GTK greeter to be very configurable whereas GDM is a bear. You have to hack the code to replace the battleship gray wallpaper in the greeter, and as soon as it updates you are back to the old greeter look.
Hedon James
Yeah, not completely understanding why they're dropping LightDM. Sounds like it smoothes the transition to a Gnome DE if they switch to GDM over LightDM. I thought LightDM was more agnostic to DEs, and customizable. I've also used LXDM, so I wonder if Lubuntu will fall back to LXDM, or whether they'll continue with LightDM. Then again, I was happy with SLIM. I'm not gonna get too worked up over greeter/login manager, as I rarely reboot. But, bummer...
abarbarian
Additional info Although Linux Mint 18.2 features a newer kernel, this upgrade does not change the kernel on your behalf. This is a decision only you should take. Same goes for the choice of display manager or the software selection. Brasero won’t be removed and MDM won’t be switched for LightDM on your behalf. You can decide to make these changes, but you certainly don’t have to. It is recommended to disable the screensaver before upgrading. If the screensaver activates during the upgrade and you’re unable to log back in, switch to console with CTRL+ALT+F1, log in, and type “killall cinnamon-screensaver” (or “killall mate-screensaver” in MATE). Use CTRL+ALT+F7 or CTRL+ALT+F8 to get back to your session. How to switch from MDM to LightDM Warning: This is not recommend for novice users. First, install LightDM by typing the following commands in a terminal: apt install slick-greeter lightdm lightdm-settings apparmor When asked to select a default display manager, select LightDM. Then, remove MDM and reboot by typing the following commands in a terminal: apt remove mdm sudo reboot Strange that the latest Mint Cinnamon upgrade gives the advice above. raymac46
If you install Linux Mint 18.2 off the ISO you get LightDM. However if you upgrade from a previous release MDM stays and that is because of some security concerns with a guest account. I don't fully understand why. The display manager is no big deal since I never even see it with a single user system and autologin. I'm sticking with Kernel 4.4 as it is an LTS kernel and Mint 18.2 works fine with it. I have upgraded everything else to Mint 18.2 and so far so good. ray@ray-basement-SSD ~ $ inxi -Fxz System: Host: ray-basement-SSD Kernel: 4.4.0-83-generic x86_64 (64 bit gcc: 5.4.0) Desktop: Cinnamon 3.4.4 (Gtk 3.18.9-1ubuntu3.3) Distro: Linux Mint 18.2 Sonya Machine: System: Gigabyte product: N/A Mobo: Gigabyte model: F2A85XM-D3H Bios: American Megatrends v: F3 date: 04/08/2013 CPU: Quad core AMD A8-5600K APU with Radeon HD Graphics (-MCP-) cache: 8192 KB flags: (lm nx sse sse2 sse3 sse4_1 sse4_2 sse4a ssse3 svm) bmips: 28798 clock speeds: max: 3600 MHz 1: 1900 MHz 2: 1900 MHz 3: 1400 MHz 4: 1900 MHz Graphics: Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Tobago PRO [Radeon R7 360 / R9 360 OEM] bus-ID: 01:00.0 Display Server: X.Org 1.18.4 drivers: ati, radeon (unloaded: fbdev, vesa) Resolution: 1920x1080@60.00hz GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on AMD BONAIRE (DRM 2.43.0, LLVM 3.8.0) GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 11.2.0 Direct Rendering: Yes Audio: Card-1 Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] FCH Azalia Controller driver: snd_hda_intel bus-ID: 00:14.2 Card-2 Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Tobago HDMI Audio [Radeon R7 360 / R9 360 OEM] driver: snd_hda_intel bus-ID: 01:00.1 Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture v: k4.4.0-83-generic Network: Card-1: Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller driver: r8169 v: 2.3LK-NAPI port: d000 bus-ID: 02:00.0 IF: enp2s0 state: down mac: <filter> Card-2: Qualcomm Atheros AR9287 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) driver: ath9k bus-ID: 04:00.0 IF: wlp4s0 state: up mac: <filter> Drives: HDD Total Size: 1128.2GB (12.1% used) ID-1: /dev/sda model: TOSHIBA_THNSNH12 size: 128.0GB ID-2: /dev/sdb model: TOSHIBA_DT01ACA1 size: 1000.2GB Partition: ID-1: / size: 102G used: 24G (25%) fs: ext4 dev: /dev/sda1 ID-2: swap-1 size: 17.12GB used: 0.00GB (0%) fs: swap dev: /dev/sda5 RAID: No RAID devices: /proc/mdstat, md_mod kernel module present Sensors: System Temperatures: cpu: 6.5C mobo: N/A gpu: 32.0 Fan Speeds (in rpm): cpu: N/A Info: Processes: 212 Uptime: 16 min Memory: 1425.3/16059.5MB Init: systemd runlevel: 5 Gcc sys: 5.4.0 Client: Shell (bash 4.3.481) inxi: 2.2.35 ray@ray-basement-SSD ~ $ Edited July 9, 2017 by raymac46
