sunrat
For Eric and anyone else who is interested. Install it and it will probably work out of the box. Find a site with a Torrent link and click on it. It may open your torrent client directly. If not, download the .torrent file, open your client and open it with that. You can set your OS to open .torrent files with your preferred client. I had to do a little hack to make torrent links open directly from Iceweasel. Hints for improvements. By default it will use port 6881. Change this to a random high-numbered port to be more secure. Forward the port from your router for more reliable connection. Use encrypted connection. Seed to 1:1 ratio after downloading to be a good netizen. Ok to stop if there are no leechers or you have been seeding a long time. More info and helpful links: A Beginner's Guide to BitTorrent. raymac46
Maybe a little advice as to choosing a good client would be in order. I recently tried Torrent downloads and I experimented with utorrent on Windows. You have to be careful or it'll install a bunch of crapware. I got rid of it (though it worked well) and I am now trying qBittorrent.
abarbarian
http://wiki.vuze.com/w/Legal_torrent_sites This one takes some searching but has some surprising offerings apart from The Grateful Dead. http://bt.etree.org/index.php?page=12500 http://vodo.net/films/ http://bitlove.org/top/7 even yer grandma will not remember some of these, http://www.publicdomaintorrents.info/nshowcat.html?category=animation Remember folks legal torrents only. V.T. Eric Layton
Well, thanks. Unfortunately, none of this addresses the router issues I'm having . I can download torrents all day long, but I'm leeching only because my router's incoming ports are all secured. I have to figure out how to selectively (using port forwarding) allow one port to seed. V.T. Eric Layton
It reminded me of how I need to set up my router. That's exactly what I needed because, unlike me, I don't seem to have written any notes on how to do that from the first time I did it a couple years ago. Now I just have to get around to doing it. But for now... the Rays and Blue Jays are playing baseball. I'm off to go watch...

It actually downloads at a rate 10% faster than my connection is rated.
sunrat
I just tried out a torrent client called Tixati on Windows. It has no crapware or spyware, is free and full featured but quite simple to set up and use, and was recommended by TechRadar.. It also has a native Linux version. http://www.tixati.com/
abarbarian
Neat looking program. Does it allow for auto changing the port number when starting ? I could not see this feature on the site.
Guest LilBambi
Deluge is one of the The 4+ Best BitTorrent Clients from MakeUseOf article and work with Win/Mac/NIX. Of course on my connection I won't be able to even try it out. Sigh...
abarbarian
Deluge is one of the The 4+ Best BitTorrent Clients from MakeUseOf article and work with Win/Mac/NIX. Of course on my connection I won't be able to even try it out. Sigh... I am happy with uTorrent on Windows and use transmission-qt on Arch. It seemed the easiest and lightest program when I searched.Any way I made my final choice as I liked the name. Guest LilBambi
I have Transmission and Tomato on the Mac but don't use them at all ... sadly ... because of my bandwidth issues.

abarbarian
http://xpressrazor.wordpress.com/2014/04/30/using-transmission-remote-as-your-default-bittorrent-client/ Transmission is a torrent client that comes pre-installed with most linux based operating systems like Ubuntu, Elementary OS, Linux Mint etc. However, in this post I am going to talk about transmission-remote, a command line variant of this popular torrent client. Never used this myself but I know a lot of folk use the cli.
