Using Windows XP Pro without activation

Is this even possible? For example installing Win XP Pro on a computer that won't be connected to the internet. I am guessing that it will still demand the Actication key (by telephone)For the most part I know that it isn't.I have an idiot acquaintance who has taken it upon himself in wanting to learn how Windows XP Pro works (such as installing/uninstalling/troubleshooting) but does not want to pay out the $$ for it and does not plan to do the Windows Updates/security updates as it won't be 'online"Needless to say I'm strongly against him doing it. He says he found a ::koff:: :hysterical: ed copy of XP Corporate edition. From my reading/googling, this requires no keys or registrations. So a person can just go weee weee all the way through and have a working copy of Win XP Pro with the Corp edition?thoughts? No it's not me. and No I did not suggest for him to do it. I wish he'd leave me alone about it too- asking me to look at these sites...Thanks muchIf this is not an appropriate topic...my apologies....just tying to find updated information...all the info I have from google is old.Duck

You can certainly install xp pro without being connected to the INTERNET. You will be asked on installing to put your key in and you do not have to do anything else. Should you try any to install with a disk that you personally have not purchased you will not get very far so you can rule that route out. On any type of update that you need from Microsoft you will have to install a direct x plug in this will provide Microsoft with the necessary information that you are running a genuine copy of windowsRegards

If I recall correctly, he's got 30 days before his inactivated copy shuts down. Why should he be interested in learning about a system he doesn't want to properly install? Tell him to get Linux.

If it's :hysterical: ed, it will be hacked. I've seen hacked versions where the product activation "grace period" is something to the effect of a millenium.I'm not condoning this, but the simple answer is that it would work perfectly fine if he's not online.

1. consumer editions time out in 30 days.2. volume licensing (corporate, if you will) editions do not need activation.3. hacked versions - yikes, what else may be in there? and not to be on the internet? blasphemy i tell you, blasphemy!!
He's on the internet....I know he has a Windows98 machine and his mom's WinXP Home?? Laptop connected. Apparently he has a 3rd computer somewhere in the picture he wants to install this ::ahem: copy on but NOT have it connected to the 'net.Near as I can tell though the one he was looking at is definately a hacked copy because it has Adobe Acrobat in there...FireFox, ccleaner and a couple of other stuff that slips my mind. certainly NOT a "CLEAN" install. That's why I feel like its a flakey thing to do.But...what the hey what do I know...he seemed to want to do this...why he's asking MY opinion anyway is beyond me. Told him what I thought- haven't heard back since. Thanks for the info on the 30 days time limit on the consumer versions...I'll tell him that....or not...let him learn. heh....

Why is this discussion continuing ? ? ?patio.
why should it stop? B) It's his friend's choice to install it on a computer that isn't going to be used on the internet and it only sounds like he is just curious about winXP. I say go for it and if they continue to use to buy a fully licensed copy. I'm all for fully working trials before buying. I'm fussy with my software and normally try out several kinds of the same software till I find one I like. I hate trials that are limited, I can not fully test it.I'm not saying steal or borrow it, just try it out and if it works, do the right thing and buy it. If they toast their computer from a pirated version, well than maybe it will be a hard lesson learned.

Not if you don't like it and get rid of it. What's wrong with Microsoft's software sales model is that you can only try it after you buy it -- and then you're stuck with whether you like it or not.I don't see anything wrong with trying it for a month, then buying it if you like it (and want to continue using it) or discarding it if you don't.

I have a "legitimate" copy of XP Pro Corporate Edition Multilingual five CDs cost me £36 ... clearly states a Volume Licence Product Key Required, March 2003 Systems Windows Client: Business ... Half green and silver CDs with MS Hologram. Not for retail or OEM Distribution. Not for resale. Works lovely though, no problem. B) However, when MS brought out their Genuine checking thingie it failed ... B) So now I use Linux. :D

If your disks were in fact Not For Resale, Not For Retail... why did you pay money for them?I believe they are counterfeit, that is why they will not pass Genuine Valadation.XP is supposed to ship with an "Edge to Edge" hologram that covers the entire disk...

I don't see anything wrong with trying it for a month, then buying it if you like it (and want to continue using it) or discarding it if you don't.
Hey, I wonder if my local BMW dealer would terribly mind if I stole one of his new 325i models and tried it for a month and then paid him If I decided to keep it? Edited by Marsden11

muckshifter, You may have got the CD for £36, but the Volume Licence Key you used was probably illegitimate. When Microsoft sells you their OS via corporate VLK, you pay for two things: 1) the actual media (about $25US), and 2) the actual VLK contract, which is considerably much more.

Oh, please no analogies. I've tried as many as I possibly can, and they just don't work -- because they're not the same! You cannot compare a physical material thing to something that can be perfectly digitially duplicated.Secondly, car dealers will let you test drive a car and some will let you take it home for a few days so that you can get a feel for it to see if you like it. Microsoft doesn't do that. Obviously, they've never heard of a free trial period.

You're right, they are not the same but that does not diminish the point I was making. You feel MS is wrong not to have a free trial for XP. Therefore are you justified in stealing it. Please explain how theft only applies to physical objects...You can get it with the purchase of a new PC.You can purchase an Upgrade copy for less than the full retail price. You can purchase an Academic copy (pennies on the dollar) if you are so inclined. You could sign up for the MS Partners program and get 10 copies (licenses) for the yearly subscription price of $300.You have plenty of options! For all of the other products that MS offers, there are full featured trial versions from 60 to 180 days. The MS Server products cost way more than XP. ****, you can even sign up for a copy of BizTalk Server. That sucker retails for $30K!

I forgot to list purchasing a small piece of hardware and an OEM copy of XP.There are PC refurbishers involved in the MS MAR program that will give you a used PC with Win2K installed. They may charge a small fee for the machine. A group I'm connected with only charges $10 for a refurbished PC. They pay MS $5 per copy of MS Win 98 or MS Win2K Pro. They also offer MS Works for $5 per copy.

I guess i'm still old school. You should pay for what you get. But i also believe that since i bought it, i should be able to put it on all my home computers, without having to buy the same thing 2 or 3 times. To me that is theft on their part. :whistling:

I have to agree with clhenry here. There is no reason, other than Microsoft's greed and/or yet another lousy DRM system, that users shouldn't be able to install the same copy of an OS onto more than one machine that they own.

Every person who buys a copy of XP gets to make a choice of free will. Do I agree with the EULA or not? Your choice. The EULA says "one copy" on "one machine." If you can't live with that restriction then you have Apple or many Unix flavors to choose from. The majority on the planet seem to be able to abide with the current ways. I have seen that XP has been growing on average 1.11% per month for the last 13 months...market-share-trend.jpgIf you don't agree with it, uninstall it and use something else. Many try to make distinctions on what property is and isn't. I think we need to distinguish the "natural" rights from the "real." One can argue all day about which rights are natural and which are not. But the fact that something is natural is no basis for justifying it - that's why philosophers call it "the naturalistic fallacy". At the same time, however, there is a nature vs. nurture aspect to these rights which needs to be considered. Some of our social behavior is more "hard-wired" than others. Ignoring human nature is something we do at our peril, as is creating social systems that are premised on contradictions of human nature. I believe that the notion of property in the abstract is a hard-wired human behavior, but *which* things we consider property is not... because the definition of property is constantly changing! Are human beings property? At one time they were... now they are not. Slavery is only one example, others I can list include papal indulgences, portions of the electromagnetic spectrum, and pollution credits. At one time in our history, we considered "land rights" to extend upward all the way to infinity. That idea lasted until the first time someone tried to collect rent for airplanes flying over his land...

Oh, and those EULAs are sooo useful considering that you can only see them once you've forked out $200 for product.

I have copied it for your reading pleasure. Just print it out and you can read it before you install.MICROSOFT® WINDOWS® XP PROFESSIONAL EDITION END-USER LICENSE AGREEMENT FOR MICROSOFT SOFTWAREIMPORTANT-READ CAREFULLY: This End-User License Agreement ('EULA') is a legal agreement between you (either an individual or a single entity) and the manufacturer ("Manufacturer") of the computer system or computer system component ('HARDWARE') with which you acquired the Microsoft software product(s) identified on the Certificate of Authenticity ("COA") affixed to the HARDWARE or on the associated product documentation ('SOFTWARE') The SOFTWARE includes Microsoft computer software, and may include associated media, printed materials, 'online' or electronic documentation, and internet based services. Note, however, that any software, documentation, or web services that are included in the SOFTWARE, or accessible via the SOFTWARE, and are accompanied by their own license agreements or terms of use are governed by such agreements rather than this EULA. An amendment or addendum to this EULA may accompany the Software. The terms of a printed paper EULA, which may accompany the SOFTWARE, supersede the terms of any on-screen EULA. This EULA is valid and grants the end-user rights ONLY if the SOFTWARE is genuine and a genuine Certificate of Authenticity for the SOFTWARE is included. For more information on identifying whether your software is genuine, please see http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/howtotell. YOU AGREE TO BE BOUND BY THE TERMS OF THIS EULA BY INSTALLING, COPYING, OR OTHERWISE USING THE SOFTWARE. If you do not agree to the terms of this EULA, you may not use or copy the SOFTWARE, and you should promptly contact Manufacturer for instructions on return of the unused product(s) for a refund in accordance with Manufacturer's return policies.Software PRODUCT LICENSEThe term "COMPUTER", as used herein shall mean the HARDWARE, if the HARDWARE is a single computer system, or shall mean the computer system with which the HARDWARE operates, if the HARDWARE is a computer system component.1. GRANT OF LICENSE. Manufacturer grants you the following rights provided that you comply with all terms and conditions of this EULA: 1.1 Installation and use. You may install, use, access, display and run one (1) copy of the Software on the COMPUTER. The Software may not be used by more than two (2) processors at any one time on the COMPUTER, unless a higher number is indicated on the COA. 1.2 SOFTWARE as a Component of the COMPUTER - Transfer. This license may not be shared, transferred to or used concurrently on different computers. The SOFTWARE is licensed with the COMPUTER as a single integrated product and may only be used with the COMPUTER. If the SOFTWARE is not accompanied by HARDWARE, you may not use the SOFTWARE. You may permanently transfer all of your rights under this EULA only as part of a permanent sale or transfer of the COMPUTER, provided you retain no copies of the SOFTWARE. If the SOFTWARE is an upgrade, any transfer must also include all prior versions of the SOFTWARE. This transfer must also include the Certificate of Authenticity label. The transfer may not be an indirect transfer, such as a consignment. Prior to the transfer, the end user receiving the Software must agree to all the EULA terms. 1. 3 Mandatory Activation. The license rights granted under this EULA are limited to the first thirty (30) days after you first install the Software unless you supply information required to activate your licensed copy in the manner described during the setup sequence of the Software. You can activate the Software through the use of the Internet or telephone; toll charges may apply. You may also need to reactivate the Software if you modify your computer hardware or alter the Software. If you choose Internet activation, the Software will contact Microsoft computer systems over the Internet to conduct an authentication process to confirm that you have a licensed copy of the Software. During the authentication process, the Software will send information including standard Internet protocol information (which is not stored by Microsoft), product ID and an installation ID based on a hardware hash generated from your COMPUTER. This information will not be used to identify or contact you. There are technological measures in this Software that are designed to prevent unlicensed use of the Software. Microsoft will use those measures to confirm you have a legally licensed copy of the Software. If you are not using a licensed copy of the Software, you are not allowed to install the Software or future Software updates. 1.4 Device Connections. You may permit a maximum of ten (10) computers or other electronic devices (each a 'Device') to connect to the COMPUTER to utilize one or more of the following services of the Software: File Services, Print Services, Internet Information Services, Internet Connection Sharing and telephony services. The ten connection maximum includes any indirect connections made through 'multiplexing' or other software or hardware which pools or aggregates connections. This ten connection maximum does not apply to other uses of the Software, such as synchronizing data between a Device and the COMPUTER, provided only one user uses, accesses, displays or runs the Software at any one time. This Section 1.4 does not grant you rights to access a COMPUTER Session from any Device. A 'Session' means any use of the Software that enables functionality similar to that available to an end user who is interacting with the COMPUTER through any combination of input, output and display peripherals. 1.5 Remote Desktop/Remote Assistance/NetMeeting. The Software contains Remote Desktop, Remote Assistance, and NetMeeting technologies that enable the Software or applications installed on the COMPUTER (sometimes referred to as a host device) to be accessed remotely from other Devices. You may use the Software's Remote Desktop feature (or other SOFTWARE which provides similar functionality for a similar purpose) to access a COMPUTER Session from any Device provided you acquire a separate Software license for that Device. As an exception to this rule, the person who is the single primary user of the COMPUTER may access a COMPUTER Session from any Device without acquiring an additional software license for that Device. When you are using Remote Assistance or NetMeeting (or other software which provides similar functionality for a similar purpose) you may share a Session with other users without any limit on the number of Device connections and without acquiring additional licenses for the Software. For Microsoft and non-Microsoft applications, you should consult the license agreement accompanying the applicable software or contact the applicable licensor to determine whether use of the software with Remote Desktop, Remote Assistance, or NetMeeting is permitted without an additional license. Except as otherwise permitted by the NetMeeting and Remote Assistance features described above, a license for the SOFTWARE may not be shared or used concurrently on different computers, such as a workstation, terminal or other device. 1.6 Back-up Copy. you may make a single back- up copy of the SOFTWARE. You may not loan, rent, lease, lend or otherwise transfer the CD or back-up copy to another user.2. AUTOMATIC INTERNET-BASED SERVICES. The Software features described below are enabled by default to connect via the Internet to Microsoft computer systems automatically, without separate notice to you. These features use standard Internet protocols, which transmit information such as the type of operating system, browser, IP address and language code of your COMPUTER to the Microsoft computer system. This information will not be used to identify or contact you. You consent to the operation of these features, unless you choose to switch them off or not use them. For more information about these features, please see your Software documentation, the Microsoft online support site, or the privacy statement at <http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=25243>. We may occasionally update the information at<http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=25243>. Under the Software's default configuration, if you are connected to the Internet, several features of the Software are enabled by default to retrieve content from Microsoft computer systems and display it to you. When you activate such a feature, it uses standard Internet protocols, which transmit the type of operating system, browser and language code of your COMPUTER to the Microsoft computer system so that the content can be viewed properly from your COMPUTER. These features only operate when you activate them, and you may choose to switch them off or not use them. Examples of these features include Windows Catalog, Search Assistant, and the Headlines and Search features of Help and Support Center. 2.3 Digital Certificates. The Auto Root Update feature updates the list of trusted certificate authorities. You can switch off the Auto Root Update feature. 2.5 Windows Media Player. Some features of Windows Media Player automatically contact Microsoft computer systems if you use Windows Media Player or specific features of it. Windows Media Player will: (A) always check for a list of compatible online music services in your geographic region, (:o periodically check for new version of Windows Media Player, and © check for new codecs if your COMPUTER does not have the correct ones for content you attempt to play (this feature may be switched off). For additional information regarding these checks by Windows Media Player please see the privacy statement athttp://www/microsoft.com/windows/windowsme...10/privacy.aspx. 2.6 Windows Media Digital Rights Management. Content providers may use the digital rights management technology for Windows Media contained in this Software ('WM-DRM') to protect the integrity of their content ("Secure Content") so that their intellectual property, including copyright, in such content is not misappropriated. Portions of this Software and third party applications such as media players use WM-DRM to play Secure Content ('WM-DRM Software'). If the WM- DRM Software's security has been compromised, owners of Secure Content ("Secure Content Owners") may request that Microsoft revoke the WM-DRM Software's right to copy, display and/or play Secure Content. Revocation does not alter the WM-DRM Software's ability to play unprotected content. A list of revoked WM-DRM Software is sent to your COMPUTER whenever you download a license for Secure Content from the Internet. Microsoft may, in conjunction with such license, also download revocation lists onto your COMPUTER on behalf of Secure Content Owners. Secure Content Owners may also require you to upgrade some of the WM-DRM components in this Software ('WM-DRM Upgrades') before accessing their content. When you attempt to play such content, WM-DRM Software built by Microsoft will notify you that a WM-DRM Upgrade is required and then ask for your consent before the WM-DRM Upgrade is downloaded. WM-DRM Software built by third parties may do the same. If you decline the upgrade, you will not be able to access content that requires the WM-DRM Upgrade; however, you will still be able to access unprotected content and Secure Content that does not require the upgrade. WM-DRM features that access the Internet, such as acquiring new licenses and/or performing a required WM-DRM Upgrade, can be switched off. When these features are switched off, you will still be able to play Secure Content if you have a valid license for such content already stored on your COMPUTER.3. AS TO ANY DEFECTS DISCOVERED AFTER THE NINETY-DAY PERIOD, THERE IS NO WARRANTY OR CONDITION OF ANY KIND. Some states/jurisdictions do not allow limitations on how long an implied warranty or condition lasts, so the above limitation may not apply to you. Any supplements or updates to the SOFTWARE, including without limitation, any (if any) service packs or hot fixes provided to you after the expiration of the ninety-day Limited Warranty period are not covered by any warranty or condition, express, implied or statutory. LIMITATION ON REMEDIES; NO CONSEQUENTIAL OR OTHER DAMAGES. Your exclusive remedy for any breach of this Limited Warranty is as set forth below. Except for any refund elected by Manufacturer, YOU ARE NOT ENTITLED TO ANY DAMAGES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, if the SOFTWARE does not meet Manufacturer's Limited Warranty, and, to the maximum extent allowed by applicable law, even if any remedy fails of its essential purpose. The terms of Section 23 ('Exclusion of Incidental, Consequential and Certain Other Damages') are also incorporated into this Limited Warranty. Manufacturer's and its suppliers' (including MS', Microsoft Corporation's (including its subsidiaries) and their respective suppliers') entire liability and your exclusive remedy for any breach of this Limited Warranty or for any other breach of this EULA or for any other liability relating to the SOFTWARE shall be, at Manufacturer's option from time to time exercised subject to applicable law, (a) return of the amount paid (if any) for the product(s) in accordance with Manufacturer's return policies, or (B) repair or replacement of the SOFTWARE that does not meet this Limited Warranty and that is returned to Manufacturer with the Certificate of Authenticity and a copy of your receipt at the address specified by Manufacturer. You will receive the remedy elected by Manufacturer without charge, except that you are responsible for any expenses specified in Manufacturer's warranty remedy documentation. This Limited Warranty is void if failure of the SOFTWARE has resulted from accident, abuse, misapplication, abnormal use or a virus. Any replacement SOFTWARE will be warranted for the remainder of the original warranty period or thirty (30) days, whichever is longer, and Manufacturer will use commercially reasonable efforts to provide your remedy within a commercially reasonable time of your compliance with Manufacturer's warranty remedy procedures. 22. So you want to change the world...Then simply make a better desktop product! All the various Linux flavors have been trying for years to break onto the desktop. The only successful "unix" version to date is from Apple. Their market share has been growing.Something must be wrong when your FREE product can't capture market share. Perhaps if all the various flavors concentrated on a single kick ass version instead of each trying to reinvent the OS... just a thought...MP3 players abounded in the market. Apple comes along with the iPod and it now owns the majority of the market. It has a certain "coolness" that keeps it in the lead.

Whether it's right, legal or whatever, no amount of argument is going to make people change the version they're using. Some don't mind paying lots of money for a copy for each machine, others prefer the corporate version with the legal key so it can be used on any machine. This subject comes up on just about every computer forum on a regular basis.

It is not the OS but the programs people want to use.

Perhaps the Linux argument should be moved to the Linux forum so the other Linux users can comment on it. Not too many of the regular Linux users would even read the Windows' forum.

Better not, because within 5 posts at the max you're getting the usual "what's better, linux or windows". It'll end with a rant about Microsoft, then it reverses to a rant about linux, you know how it goes. Let's say the topic posters questions was answered so let us all go on with our own business. We all know who stands for what now, so take it the way it is.We're not lawyers and no morality preachers. If we can read we can read the eula and we have to decide ourselves how we understand it.Be honest and stick to the eula then you're save.Take a cup of coffee and let's go on : life's too short for argueing. Take your beautiful wife or your girlfriend out for a spin, have fun. :o
