libeatmydata

I have been concerned about the time Fire Fox takes to load and run in my Arch 64. Slow is not the word for it. I chanced upon this neat program "eatmydata". now I love funkily named programs so I had to give it a whirl.

Wow what a difference. FF now loads as quickly as Chromium and the web pages load nearly as fast too.

I do not save any history or form information in FF and use automatic saving of bookmarks via Xmarks so I do not think I am in any danger of loosing anything important by using eatmydata.

You should be aware that eatmydata carries some risk so you should only use it in circumstances where you do not mind some data loss if the universe ends suddenly.

Man page (Ubuntu) http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/natty/man1/eatmydata.1.html

A real life example Speeding up Digikam’s face recognition (with risks)

However, in this case I can rebuild the entire face database should I need to, and I have about 66GB of photos to scan, plus I wanted to see just how fast this could go. 😉 So now it’s time to get a little dangerous and try Stewart Smith’s wonderfully named “libeatmydata” library which gives you a library (surprise surprise) and helper program that lets you preload an fsync() function that really only does return(0); (which, you may be interested to know, is still POSIX compliant).

Now I am not 100% sure what this program does or how it affects my system.I am after all a barbarian not a geek. So if anyone can give me some guidance in plain speak I would be most grateful.

Eh, you just need an ssd to speed things up..... :hysterical:

That is a pretty nifty project and I may have to check it out further, thanks

Well that is odd then.... Your apps should open instantly with an ssd. Did you setup trim and such on the drives?

Yup am sure I did. I am only getting back to normal here so am fine tuning and checking stuff as I go along. FF has always seemed slow on Arch here. I may try a stopwatch but FF took around 20 seconds to open and now takes 15 seconds. Whatever it is quicker now which will do for now.

Now stop posting and reading and go get a job. :fish:

I just tested and firefox opens in 4 seconds on my machine (Evo 840 ssd).

Anyway, I am putting in applications online and sending out resumes as we talk. I am going to go out and about in a little bit though

I'm watching are run of Clint Eastwoods Tightrope. Struck me you could always do a tourist walkaround of all the famous movie sites in the city. All you would need is a advertising board and some notes and a map and you will soon be raking it in. The Ghost walks in York do really well with the Yank tourists. :bounce:
