Firebird 0.7 Coming soon!

Just wanted to fill everyone in that Firebird 0.7 has now reached the Release Candidate stage! It's release will be (supposedly) coincided with the Mozilla 1.5 browser release. This also means that FB 0.7 is based off the Mozilla1.5 branch that was locked on August 29. This means that the code should be quite stable (it's had 2 months of nothing but bug removal), but it also means that a few of the newer additions to the code will be missing. Based on thorough testing of both the latest nightly and release candidate builds, my recommendation is that if you're running the 0.6.1 milestone (or earlier), I recommend upgrading to 0.7. You'll find many advancements over 0.6.1 and especially 0.6. There haven't been as many GUI updates as there were from 0.5 to 0.6, but the Gecko Rendering Engine has changed drastically over that period of time. Much of the code has changed, and there are noticeable improvements in rendering speed and quality. If you've found a nightly build from September that you feel comfortable with and feel is a stable build, I recommend NOT upgrading to 0.7, as you may feel that it's more of a downgrade. The builds after August 29 are released from the 1.6a branch that may be a little less stable, but have more features implemented (A new options menu for one). There have also been some theme issues with the latest builds that have caused much confusion about what works and what doesn't. Again, my recommendation is that if you're running a build from September (not the 0.6.1 build), you'll want to keep up with the nightly builds and pass on this milestone release. All in all, the MozillaFirebird development process seems to have picked up as they're working toward becoming the main Mozilla browser. There will still be many changes ahead before they reach 1.0, but so far, they've come a long way toward becoming the browser of choice for the majority of web surfers!

I've stuck with Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.5b) Gecko/20030918 Firebird/0.6.1+ for a while, because I haven't been able to build it on my own since they bumped the build requirements :(But it is nevertheless a good build, I haven't had any problems with it :)

Thanks for the info, Ryan...have been using "MF v0.7 20030925" for about eight hours now, trying everything I can possibly try in that time frame - have found it (so far), to be as "stable" as: "0.61 20030816". This is great, and will probably just get better and better...thanks! B)(Linux version.)

It'll be a good upgrade for useres that have not been using nightlies. I will notice no difference at all - I have been using my home-compiled builds for a long time. I can't wait till Mozilla 1.6 supposedly switches over to Firebird/Thunderbird.P.S. If anyone would like a great help extension for Firebird. check out http://firebirdhelp.mozdev.org/. I write documentation for that project and I do a lot of work for the Doc: User component of Bugzilla@Mozilla.org.

i'd like to comment on 0.7 FB. i've used many builds, (end of august were nightmares), but september builds began to improve. but comparing the 0.7 FB to latest september builds, i've noticed launch speed is quicker with 0.7 RC. so if its more stable AND faster, i'd recommed aiming for 0.7 final once its out, its gonna be a sweet release. :D

Just wanted to fill everyone in on status of Firebird 0.7. It's in RC3 stage, with final 0.7 to be launched at same time as Mozilla 1.5 and Thunderbird 0.3. You can either download alpha-stage 0.8 builds, or go to this folder for latest 0.7 Release Candidate builds. The 0.7 RCs are extremely quick and stable, so if you're still using 0.6.1, give this a go. If you like to live on edge, you're probably already using latest 0.8 alpha builds. :lol:Here is link for 0.7 RC Builds: (very close to final 0.7 code)http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firebird/nightl...tly/latest-0.7/For 0.8 branch alpha nightly builds, its a bit odd. There haven't been official windows (only linux) builds since Oct 2nd, yet on this site, http://www.squarefree.com/burningedge/, you can grab the latest unnofficial nightly builds. some of the bugs are quite major and this site talks about them. Maybe they're not releasing nightly builds until these get fixed? (thoughts, GolfproRM?) Major bugs such as "can't delete bookmarks" and "can't view source code" in these 0.8 branch builds. ;)

From what I've heard, there's a problem with the Windows build machine, and that's why there haven't been any official nightlies since Oct. 2. I don't think the code problems are the issue because in the past, if it'll build, they'll post it.
