Grasshopper
Finally got around to checking out other email clients besides...ahem...well you know... :huh:Downloaded and installed Pocomail and discovered after getting settings done that it was an eval version...BAH! Didn't read enough. :unsure:D & I'd newest version of Thunderbird. First of all, I *almost* like anything that has the Thunderbird name on it. See my handle. :whistling:Silly stuff aside, I think I'm gonna like it. Got all my mail, addresses and settings set on it.Now I just gotta use it for a while and get used to it. Get some customizing going with themes and icons and such. Very cool stuff. Now, to work on replacing Internet Exploder (or Exploiter)... Grasshopper
OK. I've run across the most annoying thing from Outlook, in Thunderbird. Grrr! When someone sends me a link to a website, I most certainly don't want it to NOT let me go there when I double click. Outlook SP1 is like that and it just makes me livid. I've looked in the settings for attachments and cannot find a way to add url to a "safe" list of extensions, like in @#$%ing Outlook.Strike one... GolfProRM
Don't double-click on the link and it'll open just fine with a single-click
volunteer
New convert here, too. I really like everything about it, especially upgrading by deleting the folder and installing the new version and still keep all your settings and mail. Works with Norton AV, too.Ken
Grasshopper
Well, I made the switch to Firebird tonight, one night after the Thunderbird switch.I think it's a keeper. Had my brother (StoneGiant) over tonight and I think I talked him into switching. I think what got him was the Open Bookmark directory in Tabs selection. The coolest thing is that you can open your comics up and just read them across....Very cool.*kid in a candy store*
Stonegiant
Yep. I switched, too. One thing that kinda bugs me right now. I can't, for the life of me figure out how to save a movie file (mpg, avi, mov, whatever) from a link. The browser will play .mov itself, but I just can't save it. If I try to "save link as...", it just gives me a text file.
Grasshopper
I notices that too but with the aforementioned already-been-sent-to-me url attachment file. xxx.url.txt. Huh???
GolfProRM
It usually depends on the server... If the server is sending a .mpeg file, but has the MIME-type set to text, you'll get a text file... Since firebird uses the W3c specs, it looks at MIME-type, and not file extension. Grasshopper
Once again...in plain ol' American English this time? Any way to work around?
GolfProRM
Not really a workaround per se... If one of you could send me a specific link, it'd help.
Stonegiant
It seems that there is somewhat of a work-around. If you save the link, the save window insists on calling it a .txt file. Well, I tried adding a .wmv on the end (the file was a .wmv, after all) and it saved it properly. I haven't tested it with a mpg or anything else yet. That's next. friendofdot
New Thunderbird user here, too. Cannot believe what a great email program Thunderbird is and it was a piece of cake setting up...very user friendly. However, that being said, I have two questions. Before I ask them, I read every post in the Firebird/Thunderbird section and couldn't find the answer. First, is there a way to check your email from Firebird? Is there a Thunderbird email icon I can add to Firebird? Second, is there a way to send a link to someone within Firebird? Although I just installed an IE patch this morning, I want to make Firebird and Thunderbird my sole browser and email programs. Just cannot believe it took me so long to download Thunderbird ...slappingmyforehead...
GolfProRM
Paula, Welcome to T-bird!! Glad you love it!As far as pulling up T-bird from Firebird, I think this extension will allow you to do so... I've never used it myself, but I've heard of good success with it... It'll allow you to add the Tbird icon to the firebird bar http://texturizer.net/firebird/extensions/...ation%20ButtonsAs far as the Send Link function, it was added in the newer builds of Firebird (will be in the 0.7 release). I'd recommend waiting until 0.7 comes out and upgrading and then you'll have the function. It should be out within the next week!
Grasshopper
Cool. I've been wondering about that.Funny how we gritch and complain about M$ but when we switch from their stuff, we...yes... gritch and complain when something is different than a M$ product. By the way, when the new build comes out, upgrade procedure is to just replace the program directory of the previous build, correct?? All settings archives are kept in Application Data, correct? friendofdot
Ryan, thanks so much for your prompt response! That is exactly what I needed. However, I cannot get the right setting for the extension. I am able to place the icon on the toolbar, click on it, but receive an "Alert" message. If I hit "OK" to the Alert message, Thunderbird comes up. But I do know that one of my settings is incorrect or this Alert would not happen. Since you said that you had not installed this, I am hopeful that someone else will share the settings for the extension.BTW, the "Alert" message says something to the effect, "Exception: Component returned failure code." It then refers to the chrome setting and that is the part I know I have wrong. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated Thanks, again, Ryan! I will look for Firebird 0.7. GolfProRM
tbird9768, yes you are correct... Just replacing the program directory is all it takes! In some cases, the profile may have a glitch or two in it, so you may have to create a new profile and move stuff over, but 99% of the time, all you'll have to do is replace the program directory. :)Paula,I'll install that extension and see what I come up with... I'll post back here in a bit with my results
GolfProRM
Paula, could you post the exact contents of the error? Also, what version of Firebird are you running? (Post the string from Help -> About MozillaFirebird). I installed it, clicked new button, browsed to Thunderbird.exe in the program path and hit apply... Works here. I wonder if since the External apps extension is brand new that it doesn't work correctly with your version. I'm headed off to a Husker game today, but will check back tonight to see what you've come up with.
friendofdot
Firebird version: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.5a) Gecko/20030728 Mozilla Firebird/0.6.1Error Message: Good grief...the error message has disappeared. I kept tinkering with the "button" settings and apparently got the right combination. Trust me, this was luck or...clean living Ryan, you are the best for always being patient enough to help me. Thanks again!!!
friendofdot
Ryan, one more question, please. In Thunderbird, where do I set when it checks for new mail? In other words, does it automatically check when I launch the program? Is there a setting where I can have it check for new email every 15-20 minutes or something like that?TIA. BTW, Thunderbird is awesome...whoops, think I already said that
GolfProRM
Tools -> Account Settings -> Server settings (for the account) and there's a check for new mail every X minutes That's where all the server-type settings are at (leave mail on server, delete after x days, etc.)Glad you got the External app to work! Now that I have it installed, i really like the idea!!

GolfProRM
Well, the offense wasn't pretty, but we do have the #1 defense in the country, and they played quite well... we won 30-
friendofdot
Ryan, am getting the error message again when I try to launch TB in FB. The message reads as follows:ALERT[Exception..."Component returned failure code:0X80004005 (ns_Error_Failure) (nsITransferable.get transfer TransferData)" nsresult: "0X80004005 (ns_error_failure) location""JS Frame::chrome://externalapp/content/externalapp/js :: anonymous :: line74" data:no]Am not going to try messing with anything again until I get your advice.
