abarbarian
I think I'm turning into a penguin Been given a new "regular" for me voluntary driving, taking a guy to a therapy pool for a swim and home again. Well we got talking on the 15 min journey and as I do nothing much these days, it is winter, apart from play with penguins. the talk circled around and landed on Adriane- Knoppix. A distro I played with fleetingly a few years ago.As the guy showed some interest and seemed a nice fella I told him I would burn him a disc and he could give it a try out.He said his wife would be able to help out with the booting if I talked him through it. Duly burnt said disc and this week picking him up I met his wife and after a few seconds it was apparent to me that they would find it not so easy to follow my "clear as mud" instructions. So on the trip to the pool I offered to show him how to boot in after the return journey. He gratefully accepted the offer. After the obligatory tea and biscuits "this is the UK" I showed him how to boot and he was amazed when the pc started to talk to him. Even more amazed when the pc talked him through playing a cd from the second drive. An even more amazed when the pc read a written A4 sheet placed in the scanner. An he would have been even more amazed if we could have gotten web access "it came to me on the drive home that the problem could lie in the fact that the pc was connected by wireless". I told him that this lack of connection puzzled me as on my test run at home this had not been a problem "cable connection" He was blown away by the fact that Adriane could play Daisy discs and all of this and oodles more and was available for FREE and was a simple as downloading an .iso , burning a cd and putting it in a pc. as he told me the cheapest Daisy "special format for the blind" player was around £250. Now these players can do quite a lot of other stuff but that is one heck of a lot of loot. As I left I gave him a copy of Quimo and Doudoulinux for his 10 year old girl to have a play with. A lot of the programs would be too childish for her but Tux Type and Tux Math are worth a look for any child. On the way home I stopped at the chippy and it was as I bit into me beer battered cod it struck me. I think I'm turning into a penguin
