Scot's MacBook Pro

Just thought I'd let you all know I purchased a MacBook Pro (you might be aware of this if you read the last newsletter). I'm very psyched about it. Very expensive, but worth every penny.I'm running Parallels virtualization beta software for Mac OS X on it, and have XP installed that way. I also installed Boot Camp and have XP installed that way too. On Friday, I wrote this blog at Computerworld, which might be interesting to true Mac heads. http://www.computerworld.com/blogs/node/2351-- Scot

Apparently, MacMall is selling Intel Mac with your choice of XP Home of Professional preinstalled in a dual-boot configuration. Interesting. John Dvorak wrote in his latest column that Apple should just Open Source OS X and give Linux a run for its money. His view is if Apple does this, Microsoft will have much more to worry about then Vista's late ship date.

I don't see that happening. One of the advantages Apple has which helps with the stability of OS X is the tight control they have over both the hardware and software on their systems. If you Open Source it, OS X would soon have the problems Linux and Windows do. Driver conflicts, hardware incompatibilities, etc., will lead to a system not nearly as stable as it is now.

Making OS X Open Source doesn't mean give it away for free. They can still charge money for the finished product. What I think he's getting at is that by making the source code Open Source, you reap the advantage of being able to incorporate bug fixes and enhancements made by non-Apple programmers. Sure someone else could come up with a distro that is derived from an Open Source OS X, but that doesn't mean people will use it if they want an Apple built OS. They will just buy the Apple version. But making it OS Open Source spreads the operating system to many more computers. The bigger installed base will make programmers choose where to put their development efforts: Vista or OS X/Linux. The idea is to seed a move away from Microsoft. It will be a tough battle though, because where it really counts (money talks) is in the corporate world. IT departments are very conservative places and getting them to move away from Microsoft will be challenging to say the least.

Seriously... how many folks out there can download ANY source code and tweak the kernel code without buggering it up?Is the average home user going to try it?And speaking of Open Source... have any of you noticed how a vast majority of the OS code is so poorly done? An example. Head on over to www.Joomla.com and download their open source content management system and load their basic free template. Pure CSS with a CSS file around 30K with nearly 240 elements. Here is the challenge, find the element and change the outer background from white to anything else. There is nothing worse than undocumented code and Joomla is no exception. There is CSS code out there done so well it will make you weep. And there is code that will make you run to your nearest bridge and throw yourself off.Any of you up for the challenge?

Great article Scot!Actually both articles - this one and the one you did earlier on BootCamp when you tried it out, that you link to in the article as well.

I have been a Wintel person for over 20 years. I bought a Mac-Mini when they first came out and have been very pleased with it. Running Windows XP under Virtual PC for Mac is a lesson in patience. Although Windows 3.11 works faster than a Intel 286 under VPC, I don't think that Apple will gain as much as they think until they integrate the two operating systems for sharing data, easier...I loved the I-Sight camera and the software that came with tiger. My decision to purchase a MacBook pro will be decided when apple gets the I-Sight built into the macbook pro to work under windows xp.Rich
