What's a Kindle? :D

Really??

The Amazon Kindle is a series of e-readers designed and marketed by Amazon. Amazon Kindle devices enable users to browse, buy, download, and read e-books, newspapers, magazines and other digital media via wireless networking to the Kindle Store.

It's the most popular e-reader on the planet and produced by Amazon. The first one came out 10 years ago. The Amazon Kindle is what sparked the entire ebook industry to flourish as it has. I have the Kindle Paperwhite edition.

It's only a $119 and they will even finance it for payments of $20 with no interest charged. I read books all the time via the kindle. It looks like real paper but has a back light option so you can read in the dark. Plus the battery life is like 28 hours of screen time. I usually ready about an hour or so a day so it lasts me about a month or more. They even have a new that is waterproof if you wanted to read in the pool but it costs a bit more.

No, not really, but thanks. I love my books, and I've always felt that I spend way too much time looking at a screen as it is. Sorry, thought it was obvious that my reply was a joke.

Yeah, I was wondering about that. Like "who doesn't know what a kindle is...especially being a computer geek." I almost had to revoke your geek creds ;)

Have you used a kindle before though? It's not hard on the eyes like an lcd/led screen is. It feels and looks just like a paperback book.

After all this time since they've been around, I haven't bothered to purchase one. A friend and co-worker of mine loves hers, though, and sometimes we'll be sitting together in the breakroom, her with her Kindle, me with my book, both happy.

A few years back, I found a Kindle on the street when I was riding my bike home from work; brought it home, but it was kinda smashed up and didn't work. I guessed that somebody drove off and forgot that they'd left the Kindle on top of the car, or something like that. If it had been a "real" book... well, you know...

My mom loves reading, like me. I asked her once if she wanted a Kindle for Christmas, or for her birthday. She declined, then offered to get one for me! That must have been at least five years ago, countless books devoured between the two of us since then, and still no interest in one of those devices, from either side.

I prefer print books but I do read ebooks on my tablet. It isn't bad on a 10.1" screen.

Some of the mystery series I like have the first one as an ebook which I can borrow from our County Library system. I read it that way to see if I want to continue with the author.

Nice but reading on a tablet is nothing like reading on a eink display. Eink displays look like actual paper versus an lcd screen.

It's pretty difficult to break a kindle too. You would have to beat it with a hammer or run on over it with a car... ;)

Lol. I see lots of stuff out there on the web about broken Kindle screens. But I'm sure Amazon would replace a broken Kindle (under warranty), and I know that the one I found had a protective case or cover or whatever (the Kindle was smashed up, though). Anyway, try beating a book with a hammer!

All joking aside, I have had some issues with my eyes in the past, and it isn't all that unlikely that I'll have more problems in the future, so I can imagine a Kindle (or some other kind of eBook reader?) being nice for me to have at some point. I actually think they're great devices.

For now, though, I don't want or need another device.

Most of the books I acquire come from second hand stores or yard sales, etc., or are passed on to me from someone else. I understand that there are a lot of free Kindle books out there, but a lot of them are not free, of course. I'd much prefer to spend $100+ bucks on books with paper pages rather than spend it on a Kindle. But that's just me.

I think the more important thing is really nothing against Kindles or eBooks. Some of us simply love and treasure books. I love finding books; carrying a book around; turning real pages; reusing old, tattered bookmarks that came my way decades ago... I even love the bookcases that occupy so much space in my home and are such a pain whenever it comes time to move! I love used books stores, and I'm sad to see that many of them have not been able to stay in business. There are some pleasures in life that are nice to hold on to, plain and simple.

I feel bad about hijacking this thread, though.
