crp
The article http://blog.sfgate.com/crime/2014/09/12/porn-conviction-tossed-over-militarys-surveillance-role/ focuses on the overreach, but what gets me is that the NCIS can spy on ALL computers. more for thought here (don't take the article as unfiltered truth though): http://washingtonexaminer.com/navy-database-tracks-civilians-parking-tickets-fender-benders-raising-fears-of-domestic-spying/article/2546038 Edited September 14, 2014 by crp
Capt.Crow
That makes it good sense to unplug*** the camera. Unless you absolutely need to communicate with it . What really gets me is them there fellas haven't got the best security and all it takes is one hack to make absolute chaos of all things Internet. On the other hand if they catch really nefarious villains .Good luck to them . Still stinks though
Guest LilBambi
I always unplug the webcam on my computer. Not that I have anything to hide. It's just the creepy factor.
V.T. Eric Layton
The only system I own that has a webcam is a Dell lappy with one built in. There's a yellow smiley face sticker on top of it.
Guest LilBambi
I have black electrical tape with shirt board square on the back on my laptop webcam. Makes it easy to take off and put back on as needed for Skype.

Pete!
I believe that military "spying" has worked to my benefit. In 1964-5, I was investigated prior to being commissioned in the Army, (required a "secret" security clearance). Agents even interviewed my neighbors, former teachers, possibly others.... Forty years later, an FBI fingerprint-criminal background check came back as "OK to hire" within a couple of days. Normally, it takes at least a month. I assumed that my prints were already in the system as a "good guy".
V.T. Eric Layton
Hmm... a lot could have changed in 40 years. You could be a violence-prone Islamic Jihadist by now.
V.T. Eric Layton
Or worse... and atheist/anarchist like me.
goretsky
Hello, I really wish manufacturers got back into adding sliding covers for webcam lenses. This used to be quite common when they first came out. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky

Pete!
Hmm... a lot could have changed in 40 years. You could be a violence-prone Islamic Jihadist by now. Not the point. I was already in the system. The most recent entries were an approval for a security clearance, and (possibly) my OERs followed by an honorable discharge. Someone with a criminal record, or someone on a "no fly" list etc, would also be in the system, and been disapproved. The people who were kept in limbo for a month or more, were the ones who never had occasion to be put in the system. It took some effort to ensure they were "clean". Pete!
So, you're not a jihadist then? That's the problem with criminal background checks. If I've never been caught, and don't admit it, as far as they're concerned... NO. BTW: If you're too oblivious to notice the light indicating when the webcam is on.... 1. Don't surf naked.2. Shut down the computer, before you do anything incriminating. Don't forget some malware can turn off the light that indicates the webcam is on. http://techchannel.radioshack.com/turn-off-webcam-light-macbook-3081.html If you can do it on a Macbook, then you can likely do it on any computer. V.T. Eric Layton
That's right. No malware can remove my smiley face sticker, though.
