Problems with debian jessie non-free

Can't get my resolution set. it stays on 800 x 600 I need 1280 x 720 I am using the non free jessie with the non-free firmware installed and fglrx and no joy debian is a pita, way behind times and a antique. My graphics is a ATI Radion R7 built in the amd cpu all of the other distro's recognize it with no problem. Whats the solution since many in the forum purport to use debian with newer graphic cards. Sunrat any ideas?

You may have run into the problem that newer AMD video hardware does not work well with older kernels and versions of Xorg. However the Catalyst (fglrx driver) usually works. Did you try the AMD radeon driver? That is usually better than the non-free one if it works - unless you are doing 3D Gaming.

The command was not found using Bash. in Debian I tried the radeon driver fglrx no joy I will download another copy The r7 series radeon has been around for several years now. I think it is probably the kernel in Debian it is to old. Will try again using a fresh downloaded copy of debian.

Thanks for the info. I have given up on Debian for now. It is just not worth the trouble and until the devs decide to join the real world it will remain a pita to install on all except maybe the oldest hardware. Other distros don't have this problem. I downloaded the latest live non free versions 8.7.1 both cinnamon and lxde. Same problem with both of them graphics all garbled and would not even give a decent picture. I did not bother to try and install them. not worth the time and trouble. THanks for your help.

I downloaded the latest Live ISO of Jessie GNOME and I had no problem getting it to boot and display on my AMD desktop. This is with an R7 360 video card.

I made the live USB stick with Linux Mint's USB Image Writer.

Some interesting stuff. The Debian kernel is using vesa and llvmpipe which means it doesn't recognize the AMD video card. That is a major problem that I ran into with older Debian kernels in Linux Mint.

Maybe I will try the Gnome version, But my Radeon is 7600 so it is different from yours. I tried the standard version and I think it would have worked, but I did not have the logon and password.

I don't really think it will work very well. The problem is that old kernels and versions of Xorg do not recognize and support any of the CGN cards and your APU has one of those.

You don't need a password with the live version. Sudo will allow you to modify the live system once it is running and it works without an administrative password.

Well I downloaded the Latest Gnome version Non-Free and at least it installed, but the Resolution won't budge from 800 x 600 so I am back where I started I would like to install ATI catilus but don't think it will work in gnome DT. as far as a password the Standard non-free Version 462MB requires a login and Password. It use to be User login and Live for password, But debian has to change things around and $%T^& up. Anyway I am through with Debian for now. to much of a PITA.

According to Debian docs user is the ID and live is the password.

Folks who have Nvidia cards or Intel integrated graphics aren't going to have these video problems, nor will AMD users with older video cards such as the 6000 series. If you have a more recent AMD card, use a newer distro like Siduction - you basically get Debian and it'll work. Why beat your head against the wall?

Debian testing uses kernel 4.9 so that should also work.

I downloaded Siduction lxqt and manjaro Xfce yesterday and installed both of them. Both are working great so far. THe only problem with testing is the stability and problems when they break. I can see why Mint and Ubuntu are at the top of the list although Ubuntu has some problems. Never had a problem with mint it just works out of the box for me on all computers that I have installed it on. I had the same problem with Debian on my old computer that was 11 years old 2006 vintage ATI Radion 4200 I no longer have it The one I just built has problems with Debian Radeon 7600 R7 Yet Siduction and all of the debian / Ubuntu derivatives work with no problem. The problem is Debian and their antique ways. Sorry but that is the facts. If I could use a newer kernel in Debian that would work, but would only cause more problems.

Well, Testing is now frozen. I can't recall having any problems with Testing when I install it after the freeze, which is what I did with Wheezy, Jessie, and now Stretch. But I think my hardware is a lot more Debian-friendly than yours.

Your probably right although as I said before my harware works with every distro that is derived from Debian / Ubuntu that I have tried. I doubt if Debian testing would work unless they have updated the kernel. My harware is not that new. Keveri AMD CPU 7600 Radion R7 Asus MB a88xm-a with uefi bios and USB 3.0 and 3.1 with 16 GB of Gskill Ripjaws ram 2133. MB has been around since 2013, Radeon R7 a lot longer than that.

As I have mentioned before, AMD/Linux have now fixed the video problems with these old - but not THAT old - GCN based cards and APUs, You can expect any distro released since last October to work very well with the FOSS driver but no longer with the Catalyst driver. So I know it's a bit counter-intuitive to see the "unstable" distros working a lot better than the "stable" older ones but there you go.

Yes but that is an update not the first release which came out in April 2015. Kernel is still 3.1X.

I'll be interested in how this works out. I do not think you can get Debian Testing in a Live version and I don't want to install it on my AMD system. No point in trying it in a virtual machine as that doesn't test the video.

Well Raymac it does not work out. Debian still is a pita. Even with a updated Kernel Debian removes all of the non-free stuff from the kernel and stretch does not have the firmware that I can find in a package that I can install from the repo's. I downloaded the recent version of Stretch and it looked promising installed fast and I installed it with 3 desktops LXDE, XFCE, and Cinnamon. Whats the sence of downloading 3.1 GB only to have it not support even though the kernel is 49.1 they have taken everything out that is ATI Everything else works. I have tried to update the repo's to get the nonfree firmware, only to find that Stretch already put the non-free repos's in synaptic nothing to download. Sid works great and includes everything you need. I guess in Sid they don't &^^&& up the kernel like debian and stretch.

Not sure exactly what you are looking for in terms of non-free. The fglrx (Catalyst) driver won't work in any of the latest distros, but radeon should be fine. Do you need wifi firmware? I wouldn't think so since you are on a Gigabit Ethernet adapter. Codecs maybe?

By this, do you mean siduction (rather than "sid" aka "Unstable")? I think Debian "sid" would have the same issues with non-free software that you're seeing in Stable and Testing; siduction, not necessarily.

 

Sorry that Debian is such a "pita" for you. Glad you have plenty of other choices.

 

Someone might correct me, but I'm thinking that the issue here is the "DFSG", and the Debian Social Contract. And Debian wouldn't be Debian without that. I guess my attitude has been that if I can't run Debian on it, I need a different computer. Others don't see it that way, obviously.

There is a set of non-free CD images for Stretch and I selected the net install ISO and installed it in VirtualBox. As one might expect with Debian I had to build my own Guest Additions but once I did that everything went fine. It's running OK - of course using the virtual video.

Sorry I meant Siduction. I now have it working. I downloaded a AMD Graphics Non-free Deb Package and installed it using deb after getting a different kernel. Finally This is using Stretch.

Thanks for your help. I downloaded a different kernel and a AMD Graphics Package in Deb non-free ALL, and installed it I now have it working using stretch and have my desired resolution.
