Help! Win7 Update Problems (Yet Again)

Help! Is anyone else finding it impossible to get win7 to download July patches? Also, what's everyone's experience with power settings on laptops with this unending wait for updates that don't appear. Is it really necessary to turn off system standby and let disc keep rotating to be sure you can get updates? I really don't want to let my mother's laptop run and run for hours on end, I'm starting to worry about the hardware.

EDIT: OK, this is getting nuts. Today when I go into windows update, it now says there are no updates available and system is up to date. Last night there were 6 updates available that never installed and I finally had to cancel and turn off the machine. What is going on with MS?

Seems like there is a "new fix" for Win 7 Updates every time I look. But this one just worked for me. You might have to turn off the Microsoft Update service in order to get it to install.

KB3168965 is the "magic" update this month. I turned off Windows update and downloaded this for the 64 bit computers

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53209

Installed it, rebooted, then checked for updates. It takes less than 5 minutes to find the remaining 5 to 7 updates.

It will install them in a short period of time. Reboot and after this is done, you can go back to whatever update setting you had previously.

Do not install 3035583 issued for the 14th or 20th time on July 19th.

Do not install 3173040 which is a full screen "Sorry to Interrupt" with a timer showing you that time is running out for the July 29th update.

The update lewmur linked to came out in Feb. 2016. I installed it on our four Windows 7 computers. It did not solve update problems in March, April, May, June or July. Each month a different computer has a problem.

As I said, every time I look there seems to be a "new fix". I guess the one I listed worked for me because it was a new install and didn't have the recent updates that broke things in the first place. I was careful to install it BEFORE allowing any other updates.

I've now deleted the five previous "fixes" on my rescue stick and added the this.

Thanks for the info.

Thanks for the advisories everyone. Woody was recommending 3161608, then people were saying that was buggy and MS replaced it with a couple of other patches that seem to have problems too. I'm going to think about this a little--not sure I'm even going to try to update mom's laptop this month. I just freak out because she doesn't get out much anymore and her laptop is kind of her link to the world--if I mess it up, she's not going to be very happy.

Can anyone give me their feelings on power settings for laptops when trying for endless updates? I hate to leave her hardware running endlessly waiting for these blasted updates. I've resorted to allowing disk spin down but not allowing standby mode. Does anyone have any feelings about whether I'm making a bad situation even worse by doing this?

Ah, the age old debate about which causes more wear and tear on a harddrive, the "spinup" or continuous running. Personally, I let mine run. I've always felt the torque pressure on the bearing caused by stopping and starting causes more wear, but I doubt if you'll find a definitive answer anywhere. And unless the laptop is running hot, you could let it run for years without damage.

When I have trouble with updates, I change the power settings to never shut down - until I get the updates then I change them back. This would be on two desktop and two netbook computers.

I did not install 3161608 on any of out four computers. It has several updates in it and I've read reports that it breaks Intel Blutooth. I didn't want to apply this update (telemetry included - yuck) then discover a few months down the road that Blutooth wasn't working and forget what I installed that might have broken it.

I do take notes but there is no guarantee that I'd remember where to look for the particular note about Blutooth.

Thanks to everyone for your help. I finally had a few minutes to spare, and after one failure (I shouldn't have trusted UAC) logged in as Admin, installed KB3168965, rebooted and checked for updates. Managed to install 5 updates inside of 20 minutes.
