securitybreach
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, LINUX! From August 25th, 1991 From: torvalds@klaava.Helsinki.FI (Linus Benedict Torvalds) Newsgroups: comp.os.minix Subject: What would you like to see most in minix? Summary: small poll for my new operating system Message-ID: Date: 25 Aug 91 20:57:08 GMT Organization: University of Helsinki Hello everybody out there using minix - I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. This has been brewing since april, and is starting to get ready. I'd like any feedback on things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat (same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons) among other things). I've currently ported bash(1.08) and gcc(1.40), and things seem to work. This implies that I'll get something practical within a few months, and I'd like to know what features most people would want. Any suggestions are welcome, but I won't promise I'll implement them :-) Linus (torvalds@kruuna.helsinki.fi) PS. Yes - it's free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs. It is NOT protable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never will support anything other than AT-harddisks, as that's all I have :-(. https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~awb/linux.history.html

raymac46
I remember back in 1991 I was hanging out with some buds in the Unilever IT dept and one of them was heading off to MIT to attend a conference on how this cool new protocol called TCP/IP was going to let you link up any computer you wanted to any other computer. Sounded interesting. Some of us had our own desktop PCs but if you had a network at all it was Novell IPX/SPX based. My machine was MS-DOS based and we had Word Perfect 5.1 and Lotus 1-2-3. Graphical interfaces were in the Mac, Atari and Amiga ecosystems. The Web and for that matter the Internet were still a few years away for the normal user. Even Bill Gates hadn't clued in as yet - although he was a fast learner. 23 years doesn't seem like that long ago - but things have sure changed a lot in the tech world.

V.T. Eric Layton
In '91, I was still driving the same truck I'm driving today. I was working on the bench at a local electronics repair facility here in Tampa as their senior audio specialist earning about $1,500/week (4 day week) in commission. I was riding a 700cc Yamaha Virago. My girlfriend's (soon to be ex-girlfriend) name was Tammy. She was a bleach blonde 5'8" waitress with beautiful teal blue eyes. I was 30 years old. Life was good.

V.T. Eric Layton
Well, Command Line Hopper... you must get up from that seat you're in and go out into the wide world and seek thrills and adventure. I know... probably not too many thrills in that part of AL, huh?
securitybreach
Actually I do quite a bit of outdoor adventrues. For instance, Sunday I am going caving in a massive cave and Monday I am going to a huge family cookout/poolparty. Weekend before last, I went canoeing down a 10 mile river. Last month, I went whitewater rafting on class 4 rapids and here are the pics I do lots of outdoor activities. BTW there are tons of things to do in Alabama/Georgia/Tennessee as you can see above. V.T. Eric Layton
EXCELLENT! You're having FUN! That's good. Now all you need is a reliable and substantial regular income that doesn't require you to do any work for it (read as LOTTERY WINNINGS!).
V.T. Eric Layton
Dude! There are safer ways to bathe on Saturday, you know. By the way, you're looking like you're having a good time in those pics. I see your hair is growing out pretty good again. This Tuesday coming up will be the 4 years anniversary since my stay in the hospital in 2010 and my 1 year anniversary since I last cut my hair. I can just about now start putting it in a wee little pony tail.
