Craig's List question

First, I don't do Craig's List. Never have and don't intend to start but I got a call from one of my senior citizens asking for help so I said I'd try and find out.

Apparently she has an email with a picture of an item. She does have the page up but doesn't know how to post the picture. Last time I checked, she was using Windows 8 - not sure if she is running 8.1 or 10 at this point in time.

My basic question: in order to post a picture must the picture be hosted somewhere?

My first instinct would be to tell her to download the picture to her computer then upload the picture from her computer to the site but I have no idea if that is correct.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I guess i should have googled first:

Step 1: Get the Picture On-Line

so that answers my question and again proves my instincts are 100% wrong. :teehee:

I'd never make it as a fortune teller! I also don't play the stock market.

Step 2: code as html

Step 3: insert in your Craigslist post.

I discovered I can have her put the file on ImgBam without even creating an account, and get the html from the site. I tested it and this works.

One question remaining: Any idea what size the image has to be?

I'll start looking around to see if I can discover this.

think that they take anything over 640*480 and compress down to those dimensions, keeping the aspect ratio.(ps: i do not do CL transactions at residences unless the item is huge. and i no longer do CL for huge items)

Thanks.

All I've come up with so far in my searching is a lot of conflicting information, even from the Craigslist site itself.

Examples:

1. You can use a template to create your html ad then right above Step 1, step 2 and Step3 it says:

Please note: We're sorry, but Craigslist no longer supports HTML ads like ours in most sections. :bang:

2. a) Photo size can be no larger than 300 pixels on the longest side, b ) picture has to be smaller than 600 x 480, c) picture size doesn't matter because Craigslist will compress the image.

3. a) Images must be stored off site and online somewhere b ) Craiglist will store your image.

I have a feeling I will be stumbling my way around when I go to help her post an ad.

I'll write down what worked, assuming I can get it working, and then post here for anyone stumbling onto this thread to get some information. At least, it will be accurate as of march 2016.

I don't own a smartphone so me trying to help her with whatever phone she has is not possible.

First problem, she got an email with 10 pictures so I think she wants to post them. (I don't think she does email on her phone).

I walked her through downloading the pictures to her computer, uploading one picture to ImgBam and trying to post it.

She hasn't called since Saturday to let me know if it worked or not.

Ah, OK. No worries. Didn't realize that.

I went to my account on CL and tried to put in a fake item and adding pictures is on the 3rd page.

Just add the text on page one and on page two verify the map area. I do not put my address by the way.

On page three of posting an ad, you will see the following:

vWQBfVM.jpg

Just add the pictures one by one and go to the next page when finished with images.

Hope that helps some.

Not really. She tells me that she can get to the page. I'm not sure what page she is referring to but can't get the pictures posted.

I think she has used CL in the past so she knows what she is doing. She can't drop the pictures in, I suspect.

One of the bridges in our area will be closed for 2 years. Since 16,500 cars use this bridge daily, you can imagine the traffic problems we're having. Unfortunately she lives miles away from me and I'd have to travel roads that were always gridlocked but now it is far worse. As a result, I don't want to drive there and try and troubleshoot something I've never used and hadn't seen until 6 days ago.

Sorry but I deal with senior citizens. She wasn't sure what version of Windows she was using. I had to tell her because she guessed wrong! I'd end up doing most of the troubleshooting just to get this working.

I do remember from my few visits to her daughter's home what OS her desktop uses (Vista) and what OS the laptop borrowed from her daughter uses (some version of 8 if it hasn't been updated to 10). Her Vista isn't connected to the internet. It was at some point in the past. I had to ask her to show me the cable modem. I suspect the computer might have been across the hall and connected by ethernet but it was moved so now there is no connection. She wanted to print from the laptop in the kitchen to the printer attached to the Vista desktop upstairs in one of the bedrooms.

I had to teach her how to use a USB stick, put what she wanted on there, put the stick in the Vista computer and print it. It's a very cumbersome workaround.

She'll be moving fairly close to me next month (no bridge to worry about) so I suspect I might be setting up a computer or two in her new apartment.

I wonder how many years of Vista updates I'll need to do? :'(

You don't have to have the image anywhere but on her computer. If she has it as an email attachment, then save it to the computer and she can then upload it directly to craigslist.

Thanks. I did walk her through how to download the 10 pictures she got in an email.

First I had to explain how to create a folder and give it a name - otherwise she'd never be able to find the images.

Second I had to walk her through downloading an image from the email. I think they were attachments by the way she said I have these 10 green boxes.

Since I'm not sure what she uses for email, I told her to open 1 picture and look for something like save or download and put it in the folder.

If she didn't see save or download, I told her to close the picture, and use right click to see a menu.

I have no idea if it worked or didn't because she never called me back. Maybe she got someone else to do it for her.

It sounds like your saying that she has the picture in a browser window and cannot drag and drop.. She needs to save the picture to her computer and when it gets to the upload step, she needs to either drag the downloaded picture to the browser window or click the "Add Images" button on the 3rd step.
