reinstalling synaptic

Recommended Posts

Hi all!Last night I decided to upgrade my pclos and it went pretty well but when I checked on it this morning I had a few error messages ( which are included in the code following ). So I recalled the thread Dale started where Bruno suggested to open synaptic and search for the kernel. The thing is that my synaptic has been broken for awhile ( I used kpackage last night to upgrade ). So I decided to uninstall synaptic and reinstall it. I had no problem uninstalling but when I tried " apt-get install synaptic " I got the following message:

[rejean@localhost rejean]$ suPassword:[root@localhost rejean]# apt-get install synapticReading Package Lists... DoneBuilding Dependency Tree... DoneYou might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:The following packages have unmet dependencies: cpio: PreDepends: /sbin/rmt kernel-pclos-2.6.11.oci3.mdk#1-1oci: Depends: bootloader-utils (>= 1.9) but 1.6-7.1tex is to be installed synaptic: Depends: pango (>= 1.8.1) but 1.4.0-1tex is to be installed Depends: libpango1.0_0 (>= 1.8.1) but 1.4.0-1tex is to be installed Depends: libatk1.0_0 (>= 1.9.1) but 1.6.0-1tex is to be installed Depends: libglade2.0_0 (>= 2.4.2) but 2.3.6-1.tex is to be installed Depends: libgtk+2.0_0 (>= 2.6.4) but 2.4.0-2tex is to be installed Depends: gtk+2.0 (>= 2.6.4) but 2.4.0-2tex is to be installed Depends: libglib2.0_0 (>= 2.6.3) but 2.4.0-1tex is to be installed tar: PreDepends: /sbin/rmtE: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).[root@localhost rejean]#

the text I highlighted is the same one I got after upgrading. Should I go ahead and "apt-get -f install " all the files one by one? And should I, for example, install pango 1.4.0-1tex first and then pango 1.8.1-1 tex or 1.8.1 only, and if so how can I find out if it is pango-1.8.1-1tex or pango-1.8.1-0tex, etc.?I will wait for some wise advice before I do anything.Thanks!P.S. Sorry, I cannot highlight it but it's the few lines between the two ""s.

Ok! I just tried a few to see what would happen:

Hi RéjeanHow come all those different mirrors are active ?? . . . Looks like you get lists from everywhere around the world . . . Anyway . . . could you try "apt-get update" now ?? . . . And please do not use Kpackage anymore and see to it that you can use Synaptic a.s.a.p. !B) Bruno

Should I try "apt-get update now"? Or maybe "apt-get update I'm in a hurry" lol.Seriously I wouldn't have used kpackage if Synaptic had been working. Anything else I can try from a console because I've tried kynaptic and same thing, no go.

Hi Bruno!I did the upgrade last night ( over night ) and here is what I found this morning:

[root@localhost rejean]# apt-get upgradeReading Package Lists... DoneBuilding Dependency Tree... DoneYou might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these. The following packages have unmet dependencies: cpio: PreDepends: /sbin/rmt kernel-pclos-2.6.11.oci3.mdk#1-1oci: Depends: bootloader-utils (>= 1.9) but 1.6-7.1tex is installed tar: PreDepends: /sbin/rmtE: Unmet dependencies. Try using -f.[root@localhost rejean]#

This is why I tried updating as Ross suggested.

But that is the wrong kernel . . . :(Could you first please show us

I did noticed in Dale's thread that you had mentionned kernel-pclos-2.6.11.oci4.mdk#1-1oci

root@localhost rejean]# cat /etc/apt/sources.list#PCLINUXOS apt repositoryrpm http://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/contrib/texstar/pclinuxos/apt/ pclinuxos/2004 os updates texstarrpm ftp://ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu/pub/metalab/distributions/contrib/texstar/pclinuxos/apt/ pclinuxos/2004 os updates texstarrpm ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/metalab/distributions/contrib/texstar/pclinuxos/apt/ pclinuxos/2004 os updates texstarrpm ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/mirrors/sunsite/distributions/contrib/texstar/pclinuxos/apt/ pclinuxos/2004 os updates texstar

but I couldn't refresh my list in kpackage and didn't know how to do it in console mode.

Hi RéjeanYou will need to comment out a few sources !!Look here:

#PCLINUXOS apt repositoryrpm http://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distribut.../pclinuxos/apt/ pclinuxos/2004 os updates texstar# rpm ftp://ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu/pub/metalab.../pclinuxos/apt/ pclinuxos/2004 os updates texstar# rpm ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/metalab/distributi.../pclinuxos/apt/ pclinuxos/2004 os updates texstar# rpm ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/mirrors/sunsi.../pclinuxos/apt/ pclinuxos/2004 os updates texstar
Then do "apt-get update" again . . . . and let me see what it says . . Bruno

Yes, indeed. Too many sources, and I can guarantee that they are not all in sync! They are supposed to mirror each other, but that does not happen all the time. You will only want to have one source active at all times.

PART 2

I did noticed in Dale's thread that you had mentionned kernel-pclos-2.6.11.oci4.mdk#1-1oci
Nope . . . the 2.6.12.oci4 . . . but please the correct one . . . First we need to know
# uname -r

After that we get the new kernel with one of these 4:

# apt-get install kernel-pclos-2.6.12.oci4.mdk#1-1tex# apt-get install kernel-pclos-i586-up-1GB-2.6.12.oci4.mdk#1-1tex# apt-get install kernel-pclos-i586-up-4GB-2.6.12.oci4.mdk#1-1tex# apt-get install kernel-pclos-smp-2.6.12.oci4.mdk#1-1tex

BUT . . only ONE of them . . . . . . !!!! . . The one that matches the "uname -r" . . . .later you can remove the old kernel in Synaptic. Bruno

I could probably go by process of elimination . knowing that all I've got is 320 or so MB of RAM but I'll wait for you! Now hurry up I've got a bus to catch. Just kidding!!!lol! I do appreciate your help Bruno, you know that!

This is the one  . . . . BUT . . did you comment out the sources like I indicated 4 posts up ? ( if not please do that first ):hmm: BrunoPS: After the kernel upgrade you will see a new section in Lilo "-2.6.12.oci4" . . that is the one you should boot from now on.

Hi Bruno! How and where would I comment them out. If I were in Mandriva or somewhere else, Suse for example I would know but since synatic is not working I haven't got a clue. A hint?...please, pretty please.

Hi RéjeanYou simply do

# kwrite /etc/apt/sources.list

And the file will open in the editor . . . then you place the # marks and save the file. After that you do

# apt-get update# apt-get install kernel-pclos-2.6.12.oci4.mdk#1-1tex

 Bruno

You are getting there. Sorry about leading you astray. I was in the middle of my Suse laptop updates when I posted. I tried with the space to get to the web site and got errors but it worked without the space. Glad you are making progress.

Okay now show me

# apt-get -f install

Maybe we have to switch mirror because this one seems not to have the latest packages . . Bruno
